Self-Abandonment

You’re not healing if you’re still abandoning yourself to keep someone.

A lot of people think healing is awareness—

understanding the pattern, recognizing the red flags, knowing what’s wrong.

But real healing doesn’t happen in your thoughts.

It shows up in your decisions.

In the moments where:

you want to explain yourself again…

you want to give one more chance…

you want to ignore what you felt just to keep the connection…

and instead—you pause.

That’s the shift.

Because self-abandonment doesn’t always look obvious.

Sometimes it looks like being “understanding.”

Being “patient.”

Being “the bigger person.”

When in reality, it’s you slowly disconnecting from yourself

to stay connected to something that isn’t stable.

Healing is uncomfortable because it asks you to do something different:

to choose yourself

when it would be easier not to.

To walk away

when a part of you still wants it to work.

To stop explaining your worth

to someone who benefits from not fully seeing it.

And the truth is—

every time you choose yourself in those moments,

you rebuild something deeper than confidence.

You rebuild self-trust.

And once you have that,

you stop settling for anything that costs you your peace.

... Read moreFrom my personal journey, I’ve realized that self-abandonment often hides under the guise of patience and understanding, as highlighted in the post. It’s not always about dramatic gestures, but the small, repetitive choices where you concede your feelings to keep peace or maintain a relationship that may not nourish you. One of the hardest parts of healing is recognizing those moments when you want to explain yourself again or give one more chance just to preserve connection. Instead, practicing the pause—as the article suggests—became a transformative tool for me. When I learned to stop and check in with my feelings before reacting, I started to rebuild my self-trust piece by piece. Also, it’s important to acknowledge that healing is uncomfortable not because it’s wrong, but because it asks you to do things differently than your usual survival patterns. Saying no, walking away, and choosing yourself may clash with societal expectations of being "the bigger person," but these are essential steps towards true self-respect. I found that every time I chose myself in those difficult moments, it wasn’t just about confidence; it was about restoring a deeper connection with my own worth and peace. This process helped me stop settling for anything that costs me my well-being. The post’s emphasis on rebuilding self-trust is crucial. Trusting yourself means you no longer feel the need to over-explain or shrink your worth to keep others comfortable. It empowers you to recognize red flags and prioritize your healing journey authentically. If you struggle with this, try journaling about times you felt disconnected from yourself to stay in a relationship or situation. Reflect on what choosing yourself would look like in those scenarios. This practice can illuminate patterns of self-abandonment and encourage a growth mindset. Remember, choosing yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary for genuine healing and lasting peace.
