The Dark Side of Ireland Part 2 🇮🇪☘️
The Dark Side of Ireland: Myths, Monsters & Haunted Lore 🇮🇪☘️ (Part 2)
You asked for more… so let’s go deeper, shall we?
Because Ireland’s darkness doesn’t end with what you’ve heard.
It only gets worse from here…
1. The Abhartach (Abhartach / Avartagh)
Ireland’s original vampire…
long before Dracula.
And maybe… the reason Dracula exists at all.
And his name? It may have meant “dwarf," but his terror was anything but small.
The Abhartach was said to be a cruel chieftain who, even after death, refused to stay buried. Rising from his grave night after night, he demanded blood from the living. Villagers tried to kill him… more than once. But he kept coming back.
It’s said the only way to stop him was to bury him upside down with a sacred sword piercing his body.
Some believe… he’s still there.
Would you visit his grave… or leave it undisturbed? ☘️
2. The Dearg Due (Dearg-Due / “Red Bloodsucker”)
A terrifying female vampire said to lure men to their deaths.
Legend tells of a beautiful woman forced into a loveless marriage, who died from heartbreak… only to rise again, thirsting for revenge.
She seduces, drains, and disappears into the night.
And every year, on the anniversary of her death… some say she rises again.
3. The Sluagh (Sluagh na marbh – “Host of the Dead”)
Not all spirits rest peacefully.
The Sluagh are said to be the restless souls of the unforgiven dead—sinners, outcasts, the forgotten.
They travel in groups, like a swarm in the sky, seeking souls to take with them.
People once kept their windows facing west tightly shut…
Because that’s where the Sluagh were said to enter.
4. The Fetch (Irish Doppelgänger)
What if you saw yourself… standing across the room?
In Irish folklore, seeing your “Fetch” is a death omen.
An exact double of you, silent… watching.
If it appears at night, it’s said to mean your time is near.
But if seen during the day…
your life may be spared.
5. The Black Dog (cú sídhe)
A massive, shadowy hound said to roam lonely roads and graveyards.
Glowing eyes. Silent footsteps. Watching. Waiting.
To see it is considered a warning—misfortune, death, or something far worse is close behind.
Some say it doesn’t chase you…
It will simply follow you.
6. The Leanan Sídhe (Leannán sídhe – “Fairy Lover”)
Beautiful. Enchanting. Deadly.
She takes human lovers—often artists, poets, dreamers—granting them incredible inspiration and talent.
But there’s a price.
Their lives are short, consumed by obsession, madness… or exhaustion.
To love her… is to slowly die.
Ireland is not just a land of beauty.
It’s a land where the line between this world… and something else… feels dangerously thin.
So tell me—
Which one creeps you out the most? 👀⬇️
