Encouraging open communication makes a big difference in helping teenagers express themselves more clearly rather than through anger. Recognizing that the emotional center of a teen’s brain (the amygdala) is more active than the thinking brain explains why they often act impulsively. It’s helpful to remind oneself that their anger often masks deeper feelings such as stress, fear, or embarrassment. By creating a safe space for teens to share these feelings, parents can strengthen their relationship and help teens develop better emotional regulation skills.
