Naps

... Read moreBased on my experience navigating infant sleep schedules, understanding how many naps your baby needs each day can make a huge difference in their mood and development. Newborns typically need 3 to 5 naps totaling 7 to 9 hours, as they have shorter wake windows and need plenty of rest to grow. Around 3 to 5 months, babies often settle into 3 to 4 naps that add up to about 4 to 8 hours, which can still seem like a lot but reflects their ongoing brain development. From 5 to 8 months, the number of naps usually reduces to 2 or 3, lasting 3 to 4 hours combined. This shift is a natural progression as babies consolidate their sleep and start developing longer nighttime stretches. By 9 to 11 months, many infants typically take 2 naps daily lasting 2 to 4 hours in total before eventually transitioning to just one nap around the 12 to 18 months mark. Some toddlers may phase out naps entirely by 19 to 24 months, while others still benefit from 1 or 2. Tracking your baby’s sleep and observing their tired cues can help you adjust nap frequency and duration for optimal rest. Consistency in sleep routines and a safe sleep environment are also key to promoting good naps and preventing common new parent challenges. Remember, every baby is unique, so flexibility and patience are essential as you find what works best for your family.
