As a parent, one of the most important lessons to teach your child is how to recognize and respond to stranger danger. Encountering strangers with seemingly innocent or persuasive approaches, such as "Would you like some candy?" or "I have a special gift for you," can be confusing and frightening for children. Reinforcing the concept of “safe strangers” — like police officers or store employees — can empower kids to confidently ask for help if ever needed. Additionally, teaching children to trust their instincts and communicate any uncomfortable encounters to parents immediately builds an important layer of safety.
