Bottle feeding kittens

We live on a farm so we have barn cats to keep the mouse/rodent population down.

Every few years we have a momma cat that has kittens and turns out to be a horrible mother or disappears due to coyotes. So we end up with orphaned kittens.

I have learned to always keep supplies in hand.

Here’s what I have one hand for orphaned kittens in our homestead.

We have saved numerous orphaned kittens both on the farm and when neighbors find abandoned kittens.

1-a miracle nipple on hand & syringe for feeding.

2- Evaporated milk (key ingredient in homemade kitten formula)

3-Corn Syrup (if the kitten is cold of lethargic, corn syrup acts as a energy booster)

4- Heating pads (all baby animals need warmth, heating pads are a safe and easy way to keep little babies warm)

5. Baby suction bulb

A few things to keep in mind if you find an orphaned kitten under the age of 6 weeks.

They need milk.

Keep them warm. (If their mouth is freezing cold, wrap them in warm blankets or use a blow dryer to get them warm asap)

They will need to be stimulated to go pee & poop. Mother usually does this by licking them, I use warm wet wipes or paper towels.

Go slow when feeding and allow the kitten to swallow it, if milk comes out their noses it’s not a good sign. Suction it out and watch for aspiration.

If you have a nearby vet, get the kitten in to see them. If you’re worried about sickness or aspiration.

We are very rural and the vet is hours away and we only use them for emergencies… usually the large animals.
