During my daily walks, I’ve often found that the smallest observations can lead to the most profound realizations. Recently, while walking a familiar trail around my housing development, I encountered a small retention pond that caught my attention. It was just a tiny pool of water, probably no more than 10 gallons, and in that seemingly insignificant space, I found a thriving community of fish and minnows. What struck me the most was not just the presence of life, but the resilience of this life thriving in conditions that seemed minimal at best. How these fish came to inhabit this small body of water remains a mystery to me, but their existence there was a powerful metaphor. It reminded me that no matter the difficulty or limitation of my own circumstances, there is always potential to sustain life, hope, and growth. This insight encouraged me to reflect on the idea of 'start where you are and heal as you go.' Life often puts us in unexpected or uncomfortable situations, much like those fish in their tiny pond. Yet, through patience, care, and persistence, we can create safe havens—even if temporarily—to regain strength and prepare for the next phase of our journey. In my experience as a therapy coach, I’ve found that embracing small moments of discovery and resilience helps tremendously in managing stress, anxiety, and life changes. Observing the fish in that little retention pond became a symbol of endurance and adaptability, encouraging me to appreciate the value of persistence in healing. If you find yourself in tough spots, remember that sustainability and growth don’t always come from grand environments or perfect conditions. Sometimes, survival and healing come from recognizing and nurturing the small, overlooked aspects of our lives. Just like those fish, we can find ways to thrive in places we never thought possible.
