For years, I kept hoping the next appointment, the next medication, or the next adjustment would finally be the answer.

Instead, I found myself feeling unheard and managing side effects more than healing.

So I made a difficult decision.

I quit my doctor.

Not because I gave up on my health—but because I refuse to give up on finding the right partner in my care.

This isn’t about rejecting medicine. It’s about finding a provider who listens, looks at the whole picture, and works with me to address the root causes whenever possible.

Right now, my plan includes working with a clinical pharmacist, acupuncture, movement, strength training, nutrition, stress management, and continuing my search for a holistic-minded physician who values both evidence-based medicine and individualized care.

Living with autoimmune disease has taught me that healing isn’t always a straight line. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is advocate for yourself when something isn’t working.

If you’ve ever felt unheard in a doctor’s office, I hope this reminds you that asking questions, seeking second opinions, and finding the right fit are all part of taking charge of your health.

This is my story—not medical advice. Always work with a qualified healthcare professional before making changes to your treatment plan.

... Read moreNavigating autoimmune disease treatment can be a challenging and deeply personal journey. From my experience, one of the most critical aspects is not just sticking with the first doctor you meet, but truly finding a healthcare partner who understands and respects your unique needs. Many patients with autoimmune conditions often feel trapped in a cycle of adjusting medications and managing side effects without seeing significant improvements. I’ve found that incorporating a variety of approaches—such as working with a clinical pharmacist to review medication regimens, trying acupuncture to reduce inflammation and stress, and focusing on movement and strength training—can make a meaningful difference. Nutrition plays a vital role too. By tuning in to how different foods affect my symptoms and consulting with nutrition experts, I’ve been able to customize my diet to support my immune system better. Stress management techniques, including mindfulness and relaxation practices, are equally important, as stress can exacerbate autoimmune flare-ups. Above all, advocating for oneself is essential. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, seek second opinions, or explore complementary therapies. Healing often isn’t linear; it requires patience, flexibility, and a multidisciplinary approach. My journey continues as I search for a healthcare provider who truly values evidence-based care tailored to my individual story. If you resonate with feeling unheard or stuck in your health journey, remember that seeking a holistic-minded physician and a supportive healthcare team can empower you on the path to better health.
