Clean my coop with me ❤️
Clean my chicken coop with me!
Hey everyone! So glad you're here joining me on this essential chore: cleaning the chicken coop! It might not be the most glamorous part of keeping backyard chickens, but trust me, a clean coop is the secret to a happy, healthy, and productive flock. Over the years, I've learned a few tricks to make this routine less of a chore and more of a satisfying step in ensuring my feathered friends thrive. First things first, consistency is key! I like to break down my cleaning into daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Daily Tidy-Ups: Every morning when I collect eggs, I do a quick visual check. I'll scoop out any obvious wet spots or poopy patches from the bedding – especially under the roosting bars. This prevents ammonia buildup, which is really bad for their respiratory systems. I also make sure their food and water are fresh and clean. A few minutes each day saves a lot of work later! My Weekly Deep Clean Routine: This is where the real work happens, but it doesn't have to be daunting. Empty the Coop: I start by removing all the old bedding. Depending on the type of bedding (I usually use pine shavings or straw), this can be a dusty job, so a good mask is a must! I shovel it all out and add it to my compost pile – it's fantastic for the garden after it breaks down! Scrape & Sweep: Once the coop is empty, I grab a sturdy scraper (a paint scraper or a small garden hoe works wonders) and scrape off any dried-on droppings from the floor, perches, and nest boxes. Then, a good sweep gets rid of any loose debris. Natural Disinfect & Deodorize: For cleaning, I'm a big fan of natural solutions. I mix a solution of white vinegar and water (about 1:1 ratio) in a spray bottle. I spray down all surfaces – floors, walls, perches, and nest boxes – and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it down. Vinegar is a great disinfectant and helps neutralize odors without harsh chemicals that could harm the chickens. Sometimes, I'll sprinkle some CoopCleaner or Diatomaceous Earth (food-grade, of course!) on the floor before adding fresh bedding; it helps absorb moisture and deters pests. Fresh Bedding: Once everything is dry, I lay down a fresh, thick layer of pine shavings or straw. My chickens absolutely love scratching around in fresh bedding! I make sure the nest boxes get a fresh layer too, it encourages them to lay there. Wash Feeders & Waterers: While the coop is airing out, I give their feeders and waterers a thorough scrub with soap and water, rinsing them really well. Clean food and water containers are crucial for preventing the spread of disease. Monthly/Seasonal Refresh: About once a month, or seasonally, I'll go an extra step. This includes checking for any repairs needed, inspecting for mites or other pests (especially under perches), and giving the exterior a good wash if needed. I also make sure the ventilation is clear – good airflow is vital. Why Bother? Honestly, a clean coop isn't just for show. It prevents respiratory illnesses, reduces the risk of parasites like mites and lice, and keeps the whole backyard smelling much better! Plus, I find that a clean environment really makes my hens happier and more comfortable, which in turn leads to better egg production. So there you have it – my no-fuss guide to keeping a sparkling clean chicken coop. It takes a little effort, but the rewards are definitely worth it for our beloved backyard birds.
