Update on my cinderblock Raised garden beds

2025/1/18 Edited to

... Read moreIt's true, my cinder block raised garden beds are absolutely thriving, and my morning garden checks have become my favorite routine! Seeing those herbs flourish just makes my day. After a lot of research, I decided on cinder blocks for a few reasons, and I wanted to share my journey and some tips with you all. First off, the cost-effectiveness of a DIY cinder block raised garden bed is unbeatable. If you're looking for inexpensive raised garden bed ideas, this is definitely one to consider. You can often find cinder blocks quite affordably, making it a budget-friendly project that delivers big results. For anyone thinking about a cheap DIY raised garden bed, start looking into cinder blocks! Setting it up was surprisingly straightforward. I mapped out my chosen spot in the backyard, ensuring it gets plenty of sun. When building a raised garden bed from cinder blocks, make sure your base is level. I laid down a weed barrier first, then started stacking the blocks. Many people ask about 'diy raised garden bed layers,' and I followed a 'lasagna gardening' approach. First, a layer of cardboard (remember to remove tapes/labels!), then some twigs and small branches for drainage, followed by compost, and finally, a good quality raised bed soil mix. This layering helps with drainage, enriches the soil over time, and reduces the amount of expensive topsoil needed. Now, a common question I saw pop up was about 'cinder block raised beds dangerous.' I did my research, and modern cinder blocks are generally safe for gardening. The concern often comes from older, industrial-grade blocks that might contain fly ash or other chemicals. For peace of mind, I recommend using standard, newer concrete blocks from a reputable supplier. They are inert and won't leach harmful chemicals into your soil, especially if you're growing edibles like herbs. If you're still worried, you can line the inside with a thick plastic sheeting, just make sure to punch drainage holes! My main focus for this bed was herbs, and they've been so happy! For a raised herb garden, good drainage is key, which these beds naturally provide. I've been trying some companion planting too – for example, basil loves tomatoes, but in an herb bed, pairing it with chamomile or oregano can help deter pests. Consider the height and sun requirements of your herbs when planning your raised bed garden layout. Taller herbs at the back, shorter ones at the front! While mine is primarily an herb garden, these cinder block garden beds are incredibly versatile. You could easily transform them into raised flower beds for a pop of color, or grow a variety of vegetables. The design possibilities are endless – you can make them square, rectangular, or even L-shaped depending on your space and garden beds design vision. Maintaining it has been a breeze. My morning garden checks involve watering, snipping a few herbs for dinner, and just admiring the growth. I'm already thinking about adding a simple PVC raised bed cover for some of my more delicate plants during cooler months, or maybe even enclosing a section to protect against critters, addressing ideas like a 'backyard enclosed garden.' If you're on the fence about creating your own garden beds, especially a DIY one, I highly encourage you to give cinder blocks a try. It's rewarding, practical, and seeing your plants thrive makes all the effort worthwhile!

The easiest raised garden beds
The easiest (and cheapest) large garden beds I’ve made. For one garden bed you will need: -2 10x2x12 boards - 8 concrete retaining wall blocks That’s it. I cut the boards into 8 foot pieces which left me with 2 4 foot pieces for the width. Lined them up In the concrete blocks and voila.
