Tonight I almost hit someone — and it scared me

Walking my dog after dark, a cyclist in all-black clothing suddenly appeared in my headlights. No reflectors, no lights, just a shadow on wheels. I swerved just in time.

Listen, I get it — black is stylish. But when you're walking or biking at night, being visible isn't a fashion choice — it's a safety necessity. The only people who NEED to wear all black at night are literally on a stealth mission. 🕶️

A simple reflective band or bright shirt could be the difference between ""getting home"" and ""getting hit."" Let's normalize being seen, not sorry.

Who else has had a close call?

... Read moreWalking or biking at night without proper visibility gear is a serious hazard that often goes underestimated. The incident with the cyclist dressed entirely in black underscores a common issue: when people prioritize style or convenience over safety, the risk of accidents dramatically increases. Reflective bands, vests, or even simple brightly colored clothing can significantly reduce the chance of being hit by a car or bike. According to traffic safety experts, pedestrians and cyclists wearing reflective or light-colored clothing are much more visible to drivers, preventing potential collisions. This is especially important in poorly lit areas where street lighting is minimal. Night-time visibility should never be a fashion statement but a safety priority for everyone. Drivers have limited reaction time at night, and seeing a cyclist or pedestrian only as a dark silhouette makes collision avoidance extremely difficult. Even small reflective additions on backpacks, shoes, or sleeves can make a lifesaving difference. Safety campaigns across various cities emphasize the use of lights and reflective gear during night activities. For runners, cyclists, or dog walkers, equipping yourself with safety lights or reflective strips is a small effort with a huge return: preventing accidents and safely making it home. In real life, many people share stories of near misses caused by invisible pedestrians or cyclists. These anecdotes remind us to normalize and encourage visibility. Not wearing all black and adding reflective elements is a simple, practical way to protect yourself and others on the road. Let’s all commit to being seen, not sorry. Your life — and others — depends on it.
