BEFORE AND AFTER RETWIST

Hey loc fam! We all know the magic (and sometimes the mayhem) of a good retwist, right? My last retwist was way back on November 24th, so it’s been a full four months and some change, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey of acceptance! What Exactly is a Loc Retwist? First things first, for anyone wondering, a loc retwist is essentially the process of tidying up the new growth at the base of your locs. Over time, as your hair grows, it starts to get loose from the loc structure, creating frizz and an untidy look (which some of us affectionately call the ‘bird nest’ phase!). A retwist helps to re-incorporate that new growth into the existing loc, making them look neat and defined again. It’s crucial for maintaining the integrity and neatness of your locs, especially if you prefer a cleaner look. My Journey: Embracing Every Phase (No More “Ugly Retwist” Feelings!) I used to be so particular about my locs, always chasing that 'fresh retwist look.' And honestly, I dreaded the grown-out phase. I called it my 'plucked chicken' stage, lol! It felt messy, and I worried about having an ‘ugly retwist.’ But over time, and especially now, I’ve had a complete change of heart. I’ve realized there’s a beautiful progression, a ‘before retwist vs after’ transformation that tells a story. That initial fresh retwist feels amazing – so neat, so defined. But it can also sometimes feel a bit tight. Then comes the glorious ‘sweet spot’ phase, usually a few weeks in, where the tightness has eased, but the locs still look relatively neat. And then, the grown-out phase, which I now totally embrace. This 'bird nest' phase is actually where your locs are doing their most important work – maturing and strengthening. It’s proof of growth! Learning to love my hair in all its stages, whether it’s a super neat fresh retwist or a wild, free-flowing grown-out look, has been so liberating. My hair feels incredibly healthy and strong, which is the most important thing. Tips for Making Your Retwist Last (Like My 4-Month Stretch!): Going four months between retwists might sound like a long time to some, but it's totally achievable and can even be beneficial for your locs' health, preventing thinning from over-manipulation. Here’s how I manage it: Protective Night Care: A silk or satin bonnet/durag is your best friend! It minimizes frizz and keeps lint out, helping your retwist stay neater for longer. Gentle Washing: When you do wash (I usually wash every 2-3 weeks), focus on gently cleansing your scalp without excessively scrubbing your locs. You can dilute shampoo and use an applicator bottle to get right to the scalp. Moisture is Key: Keep your locs and scalp moisturized! I use light oils and rosewater sprays. Hydrated locs are less prone to frizz and breakage. Hands Off (Mostly!): Try to avoid excessive manipulation. Constantly twisting and styling can loosen the new growth faster. I mostly wear simple styles or let them hang free. Embrace the Frizz: A little frizz is natural and part of the loc journey. Instead of fighting it, learn to embrace it or incorporate it into your styles. Headwraps and scarves are also great for those days you want a neater look without a full retwist.
