Sometimes you learn something new and realize you’ve been doing it the hard way for years.

Shout out to @kortneyyy_b because today I finally learned how to curl a center part with curtain bangs the right way. And now… just know y’all are about to be sick of me.

For however many years this style has been trending, I somehow missed this one detail. The trick is in the direction.

When you watch this video, don’t just look at the finished curl. Watch the arm holding the curling iron. Watch the direction the hair is being fed into the barrel. Watch which way the iron is rolling. That’s the part most people miss when they’re trying to figure it out from videos.

If you’ve ever sat there thinking “why doesn’t my curl look like theirs,” it’s usually the direction.

Play this video back slowly.

Loop it a few times.

Watch the movement.

And if you know someone who always says they can’t curl their hair, send this to them.

Because once you see it, you can’t unsee it… and suddenly it makes sense.

... Read moreFor years, I struggled with curling my curtain bangs just right, until I realized the direction you feed your hair into the curling iron can completely change the result. Many hair tutorials focus on the final look but miss emphasizing how crucial the curling direction really is. When you curl curtain bangs, especially with a center part, the key is to curl away from the face on each side. This helps open up the look and gives the signature soft, flowing curtain effect. One personal tip I discovered is to slow down and really pay attention to how you hold the curling iron; your wrist movement controls the curl direction. Some find looping the hair around the iron counterclockwise on one side and clockwise on the other side gives the best symmetrical curls. Also, consider the heat setting based on your hair type — using too high heat can damage fine curtain bangs, while too low heat might not hold the curl effectively. A medium heat setting often strikes the right balance. Before curling, I always prepare my hair with a heat protectant spray to avoid damage and finish with a light-hold hairspray to set the curls without making them stiff. Watching video tutorials in slow motion helped me replicate the correct motion and direction, which made a big difference. It’s amazing how a small change in technique unlocks the desired curls that you might have been missing all along. If you’ve ever felt frustrated that your curtain bangs don’t curl like the influencers', focus on the directionality of your curling iron movements — it’s truly the secret to those flawless, flowing curtain bang curls.
