My Acne Journey is one for the books!
Hey besties! 💛
I’m so excited to share my 5-step skincare routine that’s helped me manage my hormonal/PCOS acne. Remember, gut health and lifestyle play a huge role in clear skin!
My Skincare Routine:
1️⃣ Gentle Cleanser – Acne-prone skin needs products that cleanse without stripping.
2️⃣ Niacinamide Serum – Calms inflammation and prevents new breakouts.
3️⃣ Brightening Cream – Slows melanin production & fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
4️⃣ Moisturizer – Hydrates and protects your skin barrier.
5️⃣ Sunscreen – UV protection is a must! I love Elta MD for Black girls 🌞
Lifestyle Changes That Help:
🍓 Fruits – Stick to berries. Too much natural sugar can spike insulin and worsen acne.
🥗 Low-Carb Choices – Lower insulin & androgen activity = fewer breakouts.
💤 Sleep – 7–8 hours lets your skin repair and regenerate.
🧘 Stress Management – Stress increases cortisol & insulin, which fuels acne. (Yes, worrying about your skin makes it worse 😅)
🚫 Cut Sugar – Skip gummies, sweet drinks, and excess refined carbs.
✨ Simplify your routine, care for your body, and watch your skin glow!

Managing hormonal and PCOS acne can often feel like an uphill battle, but through my personal experience, I've realized that a consistent skincare routine combined with mindful lifestyle habits truly makes a difference. One element that transformed my skin was incorporating niacinamide serum. Its anti-inflammatory properties really helped calm redness and prevent new breakouts. However, it’s important to introduce actives gradually to avoid irritation. Additionally, I learned the power of brightening creams in fading stubborn dark spots and hyperpigmentation left behind by acne. Products containing ingredients like vitamin C, licorice root extract, or azelaic acid can be very effective. Consistency and patience are key, as fading spots can take weeks to months. A gentle cleanser specifically formulated for acne-prone skin was a game changer. Many people assume harsher cleansing eliminates acne, but stripping the skin barrier only worsens inflammation and dryness. Opt for sulfate-free, non-comedogenic cleansers for best results. Hydration is often overlooked but critical. Moisturizers that restore and protect the skin barrier help prevent overproduction of oil and skin irritation. Sun protection cannot be overstated. I personally use EltaMD sunscreen because it’s lightweight, doesn’t clog pores, and works well on darker skin tones, preventing pigmentation caused by UV exposure. From a lifestyle perspective, I've found that diet plays an enormous role. Reducing sugar and refined carbs helped lower insulin spikes that trigger hormonal acne. Instead, I focus on low-glycemic fruits like berries and balanced meals. Getting adequate sleep—about 7 to 8 hours nightly—supports natural skin repair and hormone balance. Managing stress through mindfulness or yoga helped control cortisol levels, which can exacerbate acne. Finally, I recommend simplifying your skincare routine rather than layering too many products, which can irritate sensitive skin. Listening to your body's responses and making gradual adjustments works best. Embarking on this journey requires patience and self-love, but with these combined skincare and lifestyle changes, clearer, healthier skin is within reach for anyone managing hormonal or PCOS acne.
