online student day in the life - productive day!

Hi everyone! I apologize for being gone I was very sick but I am finally starting to feel better! Here’s my productive day in the life!

HOW TO BE PRODUCTIVE

1) Prioritize balance

- Give yourself time to work and time to rest! Our brains can only handle so much high-level work. Pomodoro has been my tried and true method! I do 25 minutes of undistracted work followed by 5 minutes of rest (I use the website Pomofocus)!

2) Mental work = Physical break, Physical work = Mental break

- It's imperative that your breaks engage your mind opposite to the way you work. As an online student, I spend most of my day in front of a computer screen. That's why I try to make my breaks as physical as possible. I go for walks, do Pilates, work out, cook, do laundry, and even bake. This is much better than scrolling on my phone after taking a test. If your work is physically demanding, try doing a puzzle, playing brain games, journaling, or learning a new skill during your breaks!

3) Have a support system!

- Whether you are in online student, a college student, or in the workforce, we all need a healthy support system. Have a life outside of school and work. Communicate with those that you love when you feel stressed or overwhelmed!

4) Learn to say NO!

- A very dangerous part of the productivity culture is overworking and overextending yourself. Being able to say no is a vital skill. If a boss, teacher, or colleague is putting too much pressure on you, do not be afraid to say no and tell someone you trust!

- Also, we need to be able to say no to yourself sometimes! As a perfectionist, I often put myself under unnecessary mental stress. Step away and say no! Resting is just as important, when it comes to productivity!

It's not always easy, but I've picked up some tricks that truly make a difference in managing my life as a student. First off, let's talk about managing online tasks and building an effective online learning routine. Beyond just the Pomodoro technique I mentioned earlier, planning is my secret weapon. At the start of each week, I map out all my assignments, lectures, and deadlines. I use a digital planner (or even just a simple notebook!) to break down bigger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. For daily tasks, I create a 'top 3' list each morning – these are the non-negotiables I must get done. This clarity helps immensely when I sit down at my desk. Speaking of desks, having a dedicated workspace, even if it's just a corner of your room, signals to your brain that it's 'work time.' I make sure it's tidy, well-lit, and has everything I need so I don't waste time looking for pens or chargers. Another big one is figuring out how to be productive all day for students when you're mostly at home. My morning routine really sets the tone. Instead of rolling out of bed and straight to my laptop, I give myself about an hour. This usually involves a quick walk (tying into my 'physical break' idea!), a nutritious breakfast, and maybe some light stretching. This helps me feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day, rather than feeling like I'm constantly playing catch-up. During study sessions, I actively minimize distractions. My phone goes on silent and is placed out of sight. I also use website blockers for social media during focused work periods. It might sound strict, but it genuinely helps me study online at home effectively without constant interruptions. Let's not forget balancing online courses with all those 'admin tasks' that pop up. As students, we're not just studying; we're also managing emails, doctor's appointments, household chores, and sometimes even a part-time job. What I've found helpful is batching these tasks. I dedicate specific times, like an hour on a Friday afternoon or a short slot after lunch, to clear my inbox, pay bills, or do laundry. This prevents them from creeping into my prime study hours and helps manage my life as a student without feeling overwhelmed. It's about consciously scheduling them instead of letting them disrupt your flow. Finally, what to do in free time as a student is just as important as study time. I used to feel guilty taking breaks, but now I understand that true productivity comes from sustainable effort, not constant grind. My 'free time' isn't just mindless scrolling. I actively schedule social calls with friends, spend time with my family (my support system!), or engage in hobbies like baking or reading a physical book. These are my mental breaks, helping me disconnect from screens and recharge. Learning to say 'no' to extra commitments that don't align with my priorities, even if they seem fun, has given me back so much valuable time for rest and genuine self-care. Remember, your free time is a vital part of your overall well-being and productivity toolkit!
