Diarrhea and Constipation at the same time?

Overflow diarrhea can happen when hard stool becomes impacted in the colon, and loose liquid stool leaks around the blockage. Many people think they have nonstop diarrhea, when in reality they may be severely constipated underneath. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, leakage, and frequent loose stools.

This often requires medical evaluation because severe stool buildup may need treatment under supervision. In some cases, people require hospital evaluation, physical examination, abdominal X-rays, CT scans, bloodwork, enemas, bowel regimens, or even manual disimpaction depending on severity and risk factors.

Very importantly: colon cancer can sometimes masquerade as constipation or overflow diarrhea by causing narrowing or blockage within the colon. That’s why persistent symptoms, weight loss, blood in the stool, anemia, severe pain, vomiting, or worsening constipation should NEVER be ignored.

Do not attempt aggressive treatment on your own without proper medical guidance, especially if symptoms are severe or persistent.

... Read moreHaving experienced the confusing symptoms of overflow diarrhea myself, I can attest to how misleading it can be. Initially, I thought I just had persistent diarrhea because of the frequent loose stools. However, after a thorough medical evaluation including abdominal imaging and physical exams, it turned out my colon was impacted with hard stool causing this leakage of liquid stool. Managing this condition requires more than just treating diarrhea symptoms. My gastroenterologist recommended a combination of enemas to clear the impacted stool and a bowel regimen focused on a high-fiber diet—around 25 to 30 grams daily—with supplements like psyllium to encourage regular bowel movements. Scheduled toilet times helped in training my bowel as well. One crucial takeaway is never to ignore persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or blood in the stool. These might signal serious issues like colon cancer, which can present with similar symptoms due to narrowing in the colon. Therefore, consulting a physician before attempting any aggressive treatment is vital. Overall, understanding overflow diarrhea helped me appreciate the complexity of gastrointestinal symptoms and the importance of medical guidance in treating them effectively. If you suspect you have symptoms of constipation paired with diarrhea, especially if new or worsening, seek professional advice promptly to avoid complications.
