Send Oman to the Food Security Strategy
The Department for International Trade Promotion (DITP) publishes an analysis, The Oman Case Study with Food Security Modelling Amidst the Global Crisis, 2025.
In 2025, with the world facing a food crisis from war, climate, and supply chain problems, the Sultanate of Oman surprises itself by moving forward on food security through a policy combination of increasing domestic productivity and strategic imports. Despite being a desert country with water and agricultural land constraints, Oman can still develop its food industry significantly.
One of the notable achievements is the dairy industry, with the Modern Dairy Factory in Rusayl district increasing revenue by 142% in the first half of 2025 through the use of UHT technology and automated packaging systems, while the Vertical Agriculture Project and Smart greenhouses in Al Batinah and Dhofar districts produce 15,000 tons of fresh vegetables per year, reducing imports by 25%. In addition, Oman is one of the few countries that can successfully remove artificial trans fats from the food chain.
However, Oman also faces major constraints such as imports of 92% wheat, 85% rice and 70% meat, as well as freshwater problems with only 125 m ² / person / year below UN benchmark values. Despite the solar desalination project, the cost is still as high as $4 / m, while the conflict in Ukraine and transport problems in the Red Sea have also resulted in an average increase of 15-20% in imported food prices.
Oman therefore plans to increase domestic productivity to cover needs by 2030, such as producing 80% milk, 60% fresh vegetables and 50% closed-system marine fish, while adjusting import strategies such as making long-term contracts with five partner countries, building strategic food stockpiles, and using AI to forecast productivity.
For Thailand, Oman is considered a major export market in the Middle East. In the first half of 2025, Thai exports to Oman were $222.12 million (+ 17.62%). The main products were vehicles, electrical appliances, chemicals and processed food, while imports from Oman were $536.55 million (+ 0.26%), such as natural gas, finished oil and fertilizer.
According to the Dubai Foreign Trade Promotion Agency, despite Oman's efforts to produce its own food, Thai agricultural and food products continue to be popular, a golden opportunity for Thai exporters to accelerate their share of the market and drive investment cooperation in the food industry between the two countries.
