Trump bans Israel from touching Palestinian Westbank district
US President Donald Trump announced Thursday (Sept. 25) that it would not allow Israel to annex West Bank territory despite pressure from far-right politicians in Israel who want to extend sovereignty over the area.
"I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. No, I will not. It will definitely not happen," Trump told reporters in the White House. "It's more than enough. It's time to stop."
Trump's declaration came amid a wave of endorsements of a Palestinian state from several countries including France, Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal, which hoped to secure a two-state solution, while Israel immediately came out to condemn the move.
On the UN General Assembly stage, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said via video that he was ready to cooperate with Trump, Saudi Arabia, France and the United Nations to push the Gaza peace plan endorsed by the conference.
"We declare our readiness to cooperate with President Donald Trump, with Saudi Arabia, France, the United Nations and all partners, to push for a realistic peace plan," Abbas said. "We insist we don't need an armed state."
Abbas also condemned the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023 as an act that did not reflect the will of the Palestinian people, insisting that the Palestinian state would assume administrative and security responsibility in Gaza, without the role of Hamas or any other armed group.
The Hamas side issued a statement in response, stating that Abbas' remarks violated the people's right to designate a leader, and denied disarmament under external pressure.
Twenty-one peace agreements proposed by the United States have been presented to leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia and Pakistan during this week's General Assembly, with US Special Envoy Steve Witkov stating that the goal is to end the nearly two-year-long Gaza War.
