Cutting roads for national defense
Cambodia's aggressive and threatening attitude against Thailand has sparked a wave of nationalism in Thai society, which shows the power of patriotism and unity of the Thai people very well, but some groups of people seeking political gain have used the patriotism of the Thai people to attack General Prayut Chan Osha, the former prime minister, and the Privy Council.
It is alleged that in the days of General Prayut's government, a road project was approved linking the Thai-Cambodian border in Chanthaburi-Trad province to build roads to facilitate the border on the Cambodian side.
The Importance of Roads Past-Present
Humans have known road cutting for thousands of years, perhaps the world's oldest road, The Ridgeway in England, over five thousand years old, which was built for trade and defense links, facilitating the movement of troops with defense equipment.
Roads have played a very important role in economic and defense since ancient times, with the great empires of the world like Roman and Chinese, all empires that have built strategic roads linking each strategic area within the empire. These road projects not only stimulate economic propulsion, but also effectively propel the military and its defense equipment, which has resulted in the greatness of the two empires of later generations.
In Thailand, Friendship Road (Highway 2) is an example of a road built for economic and security reasons in tandem. It was built in 1955 under a partnership between the United States and Thailand under the USOM Economic and Academic Assistance Program.
At the foreground of this friendship road cut was not only to illustrate the cooperation between the United States and Thailand in the Cold War, but primarily for the economic connection between central and northeastern Thailand to become the foundation of the prosperity of major northeastern cities like Nakhon Ratchasima and Udon Thani today.
But the real purpose was to transport troops and equipment from the central region to the US military base stationed in northeastern Thailand at the time, to deal with the communist threat.
Until the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the United Nations saw the importance of building transport networks to address disparities and poverty between small-towns and developed and underdeveloped countries.
ASEAN itself adopted the initiative to create the "ASEAN Community Vision 2025" and announced it in 2015. It also announced the "Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity 2025 - MPAC 2025" in 2016. These two ideas are supported by the UN-ESCAP Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
For Thailand, it adopted the ASEAN Vision and MPAC 2025 to deploy in the 20-year National Strategy Act in 2017, as well as in the 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2023-2027). The fifth pin is targeted at "Thailand as the key commercial, investment and logistics strategy of the region."
All these plans were made under the assumption that ASEAN would be peaceful and full of an ASEAN atmosphere of cooperation, but the events of Cambodia's attack on Thai civilian targets in July completely destroyed the atmosphere and the assumption of plans. No one had ever expected Hun Sen-Hun Manet to do so badly.
But even so, the role of the Thai-Cambodian border is not exhausted, but the defense role, which is on the other side of the road, is forgotten because Thailand has been in a peaceful atmosphere for decades, is about to be shown.
Roads along the border were originally used primarily for purposes of trade and travel, for the sake of economic fragmentation, diversifying the boom locally, reducing disparities, promoting international trade.
But since Cambodia's attack on Thailand on July 24, 2025, the Thai Army has been able to move quickly into the border. The key factor in the Thai Army's success comes from having high enough efficient roads to move dozens of tons of heavy weapons along the streets quickly and smoothly.
Building a facilitated road in Cambodia?
For the allegation that cutting roads to links to gambling wells in Cambodia is impossible, because the government budget is necessary to implement the Budget Methods Act 2018, which must be considered by the Bureau of the Budget before submitting the matter to the Cabinet, the House of Representatives and the Senate, respectively, to implement those budgets.
For that reason, if it is not for economic development, it must be for national defense. Either way, it is impossible to approve a budget without justification.
But the reason why there are investors in the area, besides being that Cambodia has allowed gambling wells to be built legally since 1997, and that our Thais are one of their prime customers, is that it is not uncommon to set up gambling wells along the border to facilitate Thai gamblers.
We cut roads for our trade and our security, but he relied on the benefits of cutting our roads for the purpose of building money into his country, which would not have been a social issue without a violent conflict between the two countries.
Cut the road on Boon Rani?
For the road that links from Sukhumvit Road to Tha Tha Tha Tha and Thom Ada on the Cambodian side that is being hastily built as a link to Chon Rani, the wife of Hun Sen, that is encroaching on the Thai side.
Most news media reported that this road is a 4-lane street that is so uncrowded that it raises questions about how to stimulate the economy.
In fact, this road, part of the Navy's Chanthaburi-Trad border road project, serves primarily defense purposes because the border in that area has a U-shaped curve that constitutes a geographical weakness in national defense.
Cutting this road will make military deployment possible quickly, for the effectiveness of border protection patrols, and can move troops to freeze along the border, quickly responding to Cambodian aggression.
We must not forget that the Trat border is home to the 73rd border, which is the point of impact on the Thai-Cambodian maritime zone, which under those maritime areas has huge undersea natural resources.
So cutting roads to the Thai-Cambodian border is, in addition to spreading prosperity locally, reducing disparities, promoting stability in defense missions, protecting national interests at the same time.
