Korea orders removal of illegal job ads that fool people to Cambodia
South Korean President E Jae-myung has ordered the relevant authorities to speed up the removal of illegal recruitment ads online targeting Southeast Asian countries following a human trafficking case in Cambodia that left South Koreans dead.
By President E directed the Korean Communications Commission, the Communications Standards Commission and the National Police Agency to expeditiously remove such advertisements, ready to set up ad hoc bodies and establish cooperation mechanisms with major online platforms such as Naver, Kakao and Google to screen their content rigorously.
According to a presidential spokesman, the measure is meant to prevent people from becoming victims of job scams abroad, with South Korean leaders deciding to take such action amid concerns that, as the crackdown on the movement in crime networks in Cambodia begins to intensify, those behind the illegal recruitment movement may move their base of operations to other Southeast Asian countries, while stating that there are currently no official illegal advertising figures, but the agency is speeding up the removal of found posts and will start keeping statistics once the system is fully operational.
As Korean Air, South Korea's largest airline, announced the waiver of all flight cancellation fees from Korea to Cambodia until the end of the year amid safety concerns from a labor fraud movement in the region, specifically after the incident, South Koreans were lured to work in the Scammers Center and died of torture.
The airline stated that it has stepped up safety monitoring measures within Cambodia, advised staff and crew to increase vigilance and keep emergency communication channels open at all times. Meanwhile, South Korea's Foreign Ministry has declared Mount Bokkor in Kampot, Bavet and Poipet provinces as a no-go area since midnight last Thursday (Oct. 16).
Between January and August this year, more than 330 South Koreans were reported missing or abducted in Cambodia, while the number of South Korean tourists visiting Cambodia in the first seven months of this year dropped by 9% to 106,686.
