A spokesman for the Hong Kong SAR government said on Monday that the verdict in Jimmy Lai's national security case has strong and appropriate grounds, showing that the courts strictly operate according to law and evidence.
The spokesman reiterated that Mr. Lai had not been found guilty of political opinions or beliefs and that the verdict was free of political interference, with the court stating that the defendant was guilty of two counts.
These are:
1. Conspiracy to cooperate with foreign forces
2. Conspiracy to publish seditious material
The Hong Kong Chief Executive, John Lee, stated that the decision reflects the justice of the law and upholds the core values of Hong Kong, reiterating that the law will not allow anyone to harm the country by claiming human rights or freedom.
A Hong Kong government spokesman also said that the case had been vilified and interfered with by Western powers, especially the United States, pointing out that some individuals were trying to tie the case to press freedom, even though Hong Kong residents were entitled to freedom by the Basic Law and human rights law.
"Mr Lai's case does not involve press freedom. The defendant used news coverage as a front scene to carry out activities harmful to the country and Hong Kong," a Hong Kong government spokesman said.
A Hong Kong Government spokesman confirmed that Mr. Lai had received full medical and public care during his detention, leaving that Hong Kong still faced security risks and that the HKSAR Government would firmly protect its sovereignty, security and development interests under the Tea Security Law.
