🥧 Cottage Pie Recipe in caption ⬇️

I watched SO MANY recipes for this and every single one was different 😅 I just wrote down all the ingredients and guessed measurements. The bottom could use some work (I forgot flour & didn’t feel like going to buy the “optional” red wine which I regret now). The mashed potatoes are EVERYTHING to me though and I will literally only make them this way ever again!

Mashed potato recipe:

• 3lb bag of yellow potatoes (make a connecting cut around the potatoe. Put in pot of water and bring to a boil. Boil until tender. Mine took about 20 minutes. Strain and cool enough to touch and the skin will peel right off.

• I used my @KitchenAid stand mixer but you can use a ricer or hand mixer.

• 4 Tbs unsalted butter

• 3/4 cup heavy cream

• 1.5 Tsp salt

• 1 Tsp black pepper

• 1 Cup shredded sharp white cheddar cheese

• 2 egg yolks (I’m assuming you have to bake these mashed potatoes because of the yolk so just remember that if you don’t plan on baking. I would also warm the butter & cream mixture & leave out the egg if I didn’t plan on baking.

• mix until well combined and completely smooth.

• Put in a baking pan, add lines with a fork (this will give it more crispiness)

• Top with parm cheese

• Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes

• Enjoy!

If anyone wants the bottom half recipe I used (it’s really good but could be better I feel.. especially if I used the flour & red wine) :

• Brown 2lbs ground beef

• Salt & pepper

• Drain most of the grease

• Once brown add 3/4 cup chopped onion and 3/4 cup shredded carrots

• Cook 3 Tbs of tomato paste for a minute in the middle and then stir in.

• 4 Tbs Worcestershire sauce

• 1 cup frozen peas

• 1.5 cup beef broth

• 1 Tsp Thyme

• 1 Tsp garlic powder

• 1 Tsp Onion Powder

• Let simmer to let the broth reduce a little

• Top with those mashed potatoes

• Use a fork to make lines (this makes it crispier)

• Top with Parmesan cheese

• Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes

• Let cool for 20 minutes before cutting

• Enjoy!

... Read moreOkay, so you've just whipped up that incredible Cottage Pie with my game-changing mashed potatoes, right? Now, let's talk about how to make it an even more unforgettable meal experience! First, let's dive a bit deeper into those mashed potatoes – because honestly, they're the star! My recipe uses a stand mixer, which works wonders for achieving that smooth, creamy texture. But if you've ever wondered about taking them to the next level, a potato ricer is your secret weapon. Using a ricer ensures there are absolutely no lumps, giving you the lightest, fluffiest mashed potatoes imaginable for your Cottage Pie topping. It's truly a texture dream! Remember, the key is to not overwork them once you add the butter, cream, and cheese – gentle mixing is best to keep them light. Now, what about making this Cottage Pie a complete feast? When it comes to sides, I love keeping it simple to let the pie shine. A vibrant green vegetable, like steamed broccoli, buttered green beans, or even some roasted asparagus, adds a lovely fresh contrast. Sometimes I'll whip up a quick, crisp side salad with a vinaigrette to cut through the richness. And honestly, a good crusty bread for soaking up any extra savory gravy from the pie filling is always a win! Speaking of gravy, while my Cottage Pie filling is already packed with flavor, you can absolutely elevate it further. Remember how I regretted not adding red wine? That's a fantastic idea for a deeper, more robust flavor. Just a splash (about half a cup) simmered down with the beef broth really transforms it. And if you like a thicker gravy, a tablespoon of flour mixed into a paste with a little water before adding the broth can make all the difference. Sometimes, I even serve a little extra beef gravy on the side for those who love a saucier dish – it's pure comfort! Feeling adventurous with your meat pie? While I adore a classic beef Cottage Pie, don't be afraid to experiment! If you're looking for 'unusual beef mince recipes,' you could try adding a touch of smoked paprika or a pinch of allspice to the filling for a different flavor profile. Or, for a truly different experience, you could swap out some of the beef mince for ground lamb to make a traditional Shepherd's Pie – the flavors are slightly different but equally delicious. Adding finely diced mushrooms or bell peppers to the mince mixture during browning can also introduce new textures and deepen the umami. Think about what you have on hand and don't be afraid to get creative in your kitchen – that's the beauty of homemade cooking!
