Inside Out Pizza Casserole Recipe:
INGREDIENTS:
• 1-2 Tbs oil (I use avocado)
• 15 oz pie crust
• 1 lb pork sausage
• 1 8 oz package sliced mushrooms
• 2 cups of you’re favorite sauce
• 3 oz sliced pepperoni, coarsely chopped
• 8 oz mozzerella cheese
• 1/2 cup grated parm
• 1/2 chopped onion
I added black olives, red pepper flakes and garlic powder because that’s what we like. Take out what you don’t like and add whatever you do like! ☺️
BE AWARE: This is a very salty dish. I didn’t add any salt and I love salt! I really like this dish and will 100% make it again but would probably half the sausage and use half a pound ground beef instead because it’s so salty.
INSTRUCTIONS:
• tbs oil into pan
• brown the meat
• add onions and mushrooms cook until onions are soft and mushrooms are half the size
• add sauce and pepperoni (and whatever pizza toppings you like)
• cook for 3 minutes until it’s bubbly
• remove from heat and let cool slightly
• add cheese and stir until well combined
• top with pie crust and add some slits to the top
• bake at 400 for 30 minutes
• let it sit and cool for 10-15 minutes
• Enjoy! ☺️🤎
**NOTE: I love the cast iron skillet for this because the cheese that seeps to the bottom gets brown, crispy and delicious. If you don’t have cast iron skillet thats ok! Just pour everything into a casserole or deep pie dish and then top with the pie crust.
If you’re a fan of versatile comfort food that combines the best of pizza flavors with the ease of a casserole, the Inside Out Pizza Casserole recipe is a fantastic choice. This dish takes classic pizza toppings—sausage, mushrooms, pepperoni, onions—and infuses them into a rich, saucy filling topped with a golden pie crust that crisps beautifully in the oven. One unique tip is using a cast iron skillet for baking; it creates a crispy, browned cheese layer at the bottom that adds extra texture and flavor, but if you don’t have one, a regular casserole or pie dish works just fine. Since this recipe is flexible, you can tailor it to your taste and dietary preferences. For less saltiness, consider reducing the amount of pork sausage and substituting half with ground beef, or even a plant-based alternative if you want a vegetarian twist. To enhance the flavor depth without extra salt, adding herbs like oregano, basil, or fresh garlic complements the classic Italian taste. Feel free to include other pizza toppings such as black olives, red pepper flakes, or bell peppers to suit your family’s favorite flavors. When browning the meat and veggies, make sure to cook until the onions are soft and mushrooms shrink to release their moisture. This process ensures your filling won’t be watery once baked, maintaining a perfect casserole texture. After adding the sauce and pepperoni, let the mixture bubble briefly to meld the flavors before stirring in cheese for a creamy, cheesy consistency. The pie crust acts as a delightful lid, sealing in all the savory goodness. Cutting slits into the crust allows steam to escape, preventing sogginess and ensuring a crispy finish. After baking at 400°F for about 30 minutes, letting the casserole rest for 10-15 minutes helps it set, making slicing and serving easier. This recipe belongs to the cozy comfort food category, ideal for family dinners or gatherings when you want a hearty meal with familiar flavors. It’s also a great way to repurpose leftover pizza toppings or customize what you’ve got on hand. Plus, it’s perfect for anyone looking to simplify pizza night into a one-dish bake without sacrificing flavor. Overall, the Inside Out Pizza Casserole blends convenience with flavorful indulgence and offers fun experimentation with ingredients, making it a welcomed addition to your recipe collection.
