Elma Lewis (1921-2004) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. As a child, Lewis was exposed to the ideals of Marcus Garvey, which instilled racial pride and influenced her to promote African culture.
After earning her master's degree in education, she founded the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts in her native Boston. Over the years, it has evolved into the National Center for Afro-American Arts that now includes both the school and a museum of black cul-ture.
Lewis became known as the "Grande Dame" of Arts in Roxbury due to her school, achievements in performing arts, and her community involvement.
