Train up a child in the way they should go…

2024/12/10 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first encountered the powerful verse, 'Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it' (Proverbs 22:6 KJV), it really resonated with me as a parent. It's more than just a suggestion; it feels like a divine blueprint for raising our children. But what does "the way they should go" truly mean in our modern world? For me, it's about guiding them not just in moral principles, but deeply rooting them in a personal journey through faith. I’ve learned that 'training' isn't just about telling them what to do; it's about showing them. Our children watch us, more than they listen to us. So, for Christian parenting, it begins with living out our own faith authentically. This means daily discipleship in our homes – integrating prayer, Bible reading, and discussions about God into our routines, not just as isolated events. We aim to make faith a natural part of life, like brushing teeth or eating meals. One practical step I've found incredibly helpful is making the Bible accessible. For younger kids, storybook Bibles are fantastic. As they grow, we encourage them to ask questions, even challenging ones. Engaging them in 'church debate topics for children' might sound intense, but it's really about fostering an environment where they can safely explore their faith, understand why they believe, and develop their own convictions, rather than just inheriting ours. It’s about helping them understand how to be a Christian as a kid, in their own context and with their unique personality. Teaching our children to pray is another cornerstone. It’s not just reciting memorized words, but having genuine conversations with God. Sometimes, we pray for big things, but often, it's for simple daily needs or expressing gratitude. When they see us pray for them, and with them, it strengthens their understanding of a loving, present God. It’s a beautiful sound, hearing their innocent prayers! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, wondering if we’re doing enough to 'raise your child in the ways of the Lord.' There are days filled with doubt, and times when their journey through faith seems unclear. But I always come back to the promise that 'your children shall be taught of the Lord' (Isaiah 54:13). This reminds me that while I plant the seeds and water them, God is ultimately the one who brings the growth. This takes some pressure off, allowing me to embrace a more 'prophetic parenting' approach – listening to God's guidance for each of my unique children, understanding their individual callings and personalities. Ultimately, 'children are the heritage of the Lord' (Psalm 127:3), a precious gift entrusted to us. Our role is to nurture that heritage, guiding them with love, patience, and a steadfast reliance on God's wisdom. Witnessing their small steps of faith, their genuine questions, and their growing understanding of Jesus – that’s truly a sound better than anything else. It's a lifelong commitment, but one filled with immense joy and the profound satisfaction of knowing we are helping to shape souls for eternity.

A man and child in pink hoodies walk on a path towards a city skyline, with a signpost pointing to 'THEIR CHOICES' and 'THEIR DESTINY.' Overlaid text quotes Proverbs 22:6, stating that training is wisdom, not a guarantee, and parents are not the authors of their children's decisions. The child's hoodie features a quote about noticing one's own faults.
“Train up a child in the way he should go…”
But hear this clearly— this is wisdom, not a contract. Some have carried silent guilt… thinking, “If they strayed, I must have failed.” But Proverbs were never written as guarantees— they were written as guidance. You can pour truth into a child… and they still choose their own path.
