Yesterday evening...After what feels like the Israelites wandering the wilderness for 40 years...I FINALLY found a good watermelon! 🍉😂
It's almost August, and I've been through about SIX watermelons. Only ONE was halfway decent. The rest tasted like cucumbers wearing watermelon costumes. 😐🤣
And when did watermelons start turning yellow on the inside? I opened one up like, "Lord...is this mango? Pineapple? What are we doing?" 😂
Then the Holy Spirit (or maybe just good common sense 🤷🏾♂️) whispered, "Pull over to that old-school brother on the side of the road." Y'all know the one...sitting under a tent with a handwritten sign, slinging watermelons like they got the secret family recipe. 🤣🤣
Listen...don't overlook humble beginnings. David was overlooked. Jesus was born in a manger. Sometimes the biggest blessing isn't in the fancy grocery store...it's on the side of the road with somebody who's been perfecting their craft for years. 🙌🏾
That melon was SWEET! The kind that'll make you stop talking after the first bite and just nod in appreciation. 😂
And yes...before anybody asks...that's my giant emotional-support water bottle I take everywhere. 😅 And yes, the watermelon rode home buckled into the passenger seat like family. Safety first! I wasn't about to let my blessing roll onto the floorboard. 🤣🍉

... Read moreI never realized how tricky it could be to find a truly sweet watermelon until I went through several that tasted like bland cucumbers. It really made me appreciate the simple joy of biting into a juicy, flavorful melon. One tip that helped me was looking for watermelons with a vibrant green rind and a creamy yellow spot where they rested on the ground—these are signs of ripeness. Also, gently thumping the fruit to listen for a deep, hollow sound can indicate good water content inside.
What really changed my watermelon game was trusting a local roadside vendor. Sometimes, big grocery stores stock fruit that’s either picked too early or stored for too long, sacrificing flavor. The family-run stall I stopped at seemed to have perfected their selection over the years, and you could taste that care in every bite. It reminded me that supporting local growers can lead to fresher, more delicious produce.
Next time you’re shopping for watermelons, don’t ignore those humble stands on the side of the road. They might just save you from another disappointing melon and reward you with the sweetness you’ve been craving all summer. Plus, it’s a fun way to connect with your community and learn the stories behind your food.
And yes, always buckle your juicy treasure into the passenger seat—no melon left behind!
All I know is...if its seedless I do not want it bc its lab created and not how I used to enjoy it as a kid! But yes sir..gotta purchase from the guy on the side of the road, or farmers market!👌🏾
