From Blueprint to Reality: Producing AFWA

Being part of the production team for 'Asian Futures, Without Asians' offered me a uniquely insightful experience into how cultural narratives shape our collective imagination, especially within sci-fi cinema. This project wasn't just a performance; it was a critical exploration of how Asian culture has been envisioned in futuristic settings—often without genuine Asian representation. What struck me most was how the installation of materials like neon and glass, done in collaboration with the UW-Madison Glass Lab, brought a tactile and visually stunning dimension to the themes of techno-orientalism. These materials, symbolic of both futuristic aesthetics and cultural perceptions, played a crucial role in engaging our audience beyond just words. Organizing pre-production meetings helped me appreciate the layers of complexity involved in weaving together history, performance, and technology into a cohesive narrative that challenges stereotypes. I particularly loved how the Play Circle Theater filled with an audience eager to rethink who is present in visions of the future—that energy made every late hour worthwhile. Musical accompaniment by Tammy Lakkis added an emotional depth that enhanced the storytelling, creating an immersive environment that invited reflection and dialogue. This project underscores the importance of inclusive futures in media and art and empowered me to think critically about representation. For anyone interested in cultural studies, sci-fi, or theater, attending or participating in projects like this is eye-opening. It’s essential we keep building spaces and narratives where diverse identities are not just imagined but authentically included—because the future belongs to all of us.
