Was it kind or crossing a line?
Yesterday, I was studying at a college town cafe when a guy walked up, said I was cute and asked for my number. I thought it was sweet he had the nerve but I didn’t find him attractive. This barely ever happens to me, so I got flustered and gave him my number anyway. A few hours later, he texted: “Hey, it’s me from the cafe!”
I had no interest in dating him or even being friends, so I asked four friends for advice. Two said be honest right away or just not reply, the other two suggested a quick friendly chat then a “white lie” to soften the rejection.
I didn’t wanna ghost, which seemed rude so I went with the lie. We exchanged a few texts: he asked how I was, then if I wanted to call sometime. I said I was swamped then added “Also, I should probably mention I’m gay lol.” But I think it’d hurt less than “I’m not into you.” My first two friends said honesty’s more respectful, even if it stings. I thought I was being kind. Did that lie cross a line?

The fact we have to soften a rejection says a whole lot about how fragile men are, and how dangerous it can be for women to reject them without a ‘reason’. No or not interested are both complete sentences we shouldn’t have to fear saying.
