Says he’s ‘just being honest.’ Thoughts?

my bf ’s always criticizing my clothes. It’s not about modesty, he just hates when I wear long skirts or dresses. Says they make me look “five years older” and don’t flatter my body (36DDD chest, flat butt, skinny arms/legs). I used to feel pretty in my outfits, but now I second guess every piece I put on.

Skirts already make me feel bigger because of my chest and his comments just make it worse. He had flowers for me the other day, but after seeing my outfit, he didn’t even give them to me. He said I “didn’t look nice enough.” I’ve talked to him about how hurtful this is, but he says he’s just being honest and forgets I’m sensitive.

We have a special date tomorrow, and there’s a dress I adore… but I’m terrified to wear it. I can’t afford a whole new wardrobe, this is all I have. How do I get him to stop criticizing me when he thinks he’s being kind? Am I overreacting for wanting to feel pretty in my own clothes?

2025/12/2 Edited to

... Read moreWow, I completely understand what you're going through, and you are absolutely not overreacting! It's incredibly disheartening when someone you love, especially your partner, chips away at your self-confidence, especially about something as personal as your style. I've been in similar shoes, feeling like I had to dress for someone else's approval, and it's a tough place to be. First off, let's validate your feelings: it's okay to want to feel pretty in your own clothes. Your personal style is an extension of who you are, and it should bring you joy, not anxiety. When your partner's comments make you second-guess wearing a beautiful long black tiered skirt or a dress you adore, it's a huge red flag. It's not about being 'sensitive'; it's about being respected and valued. When someone says they're 'just being honest,' it often dismisses the impact of their words. Honesty can be delivered with kindness and respect, not as a weapon to control or belittle. Here are a few thoughts and strategies that might help: 1. Communicate Your Boundaries Clearly (Again, and Again if Needed): It sounds like you've tried talking to him, but perhaps framing it differently could help. Instead of saying "You hurt my feelings," try "When you criticize my outfits, I feel insecure and unloved, and it makes me dread our dates." Emphasize how his comments affect you and the *relationship*, not just your outfit choice. You could point out that it's not about the clothes making you look a certain way, but about his words making you feel a certain way. 2. Reclaim Your Wardrobe & Your Confidence: Your clothes are for *you*. If you feel amazing in a white sleeveless top paired with a long black tiered skirt and red sneakers, accessorized with gold jewelry, then wear it proudly! Don't let his preferences dictate your self-expression. Start by choosing one outfit you love, that makes you feel great, and wear it with confidence. See how it feels to own your style again. It's a journey, but it starts with you. 3. Consider the 'Why': Is his criticism genuinely about physical appearance, or is there a deeper issue? Sometimes, partners might express insecurity or a desire for control under the guise of 'honesty' about your looks. It's worth considering if this pattern of criticism extends to other areas of your life. 4. Setting Expectations for Social Events: The query mentions feeling bad when going to dinner with family. This is crucial. Before a social event, you might say, "Tonight, I'm wearing [specific outfit], and I feel really good in it. I'd appreciate it if you could support me and avoid any comments about my clothes, especially in front of others." This sets a clear boundary. If he still makes comments, you'll need to decide how to address it in the moment or afterward. 5. Your Feelings Are Valid: You are allowed to feel pretty. You are allowed to express yourself through your clothing. Your worth is not tied to whether your partner approves of your outfit. If his 'honesty' consistently makes you feel less than, it's a problem that needs to be addressed for the health of your self-esteem and your relationship. Perhaps seeing a counselor together could offer a neutral space to discuss these dynamics. Remember, a supportive partner lifts you up, celebrates your choices, and makes you feel beautiful inside and out, regardless of whether you're wearing a mini-skirt or a modest long dress. You deserve to feel confident and cherished.
