5 Basic Skin Care Tips from a Licensed Esthetician

I’m a newly licensed Esthetician, a long term skin care enthusiast. I have been obsessed with taking care of my skin since I was like 10. My aunt has PCOS. If you don’t know PCOS causes an hormonal imbalance which causes severe acne. With me being on her hip 24/7 I just mirrored whatever she was doing. I became fascinated with everything skin. Years later here I am so enamored by skin that I decide to make a career out of it.

After years of research, schooling, and certification I’ve come to a few basics that every person should know when beginning their skin care journey.

First and foremost your 20s is an ideal time to start a skin care routine and adopt skin healthy habits.

Tip # 1 : USE A GENTLE CLEANSER AND SUNSCREEN DAILY

- * A mild cleanser: When selecting a cleanser, choose one for your skin type. Example if you have acne-prone skin, use a mild cleanser that removes oil Dry skin does better with a hydrating cleanser.

To get the best results from your cleanser, wash your face twice a day – when you get up and before bed. You also want to wash after sweating.

- * Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum, and water resistant): Any time you plan to be outside during the day, even if it’s to take a walk or drive to work, you expose your skin to the sun’s harmful rays.

Tip # 2 : Add in a skin care product that addresses your primary skin concern

- * Some of the best ways to address skin concerns head on is to add a treatment with ingredients to target them. Here’s a list of a few:

-Niacinamide

-Hyaluronic acid

-Vitamin C

-Snail mucin

-Retinal

-Many many more

Tip # 3 : Make your skin care routine Adjustable, Consistent, and Tailored (ACT).

- *Board-certified dermatologist Rajani Katta, MD, FAAD tells their patients to build ACT in their skin routine, here’s why:

For a skin care routine to meet your needs, it must be adjustable For example, you may need an ultra moisturizer during the winter when the air tends to be dry. You’ll also need to adjust your skin care with the passing years. If a product you chose irritates your skin, you’ll want to stop using it right away.

When it comes to creating a skin care routine, consistency is also key. Unless a skin care product is irritating your skin, you need to keep using it. It takes at least 30 days to know whether it’s working.

You also want to create a skin care routine tailored to your needs, as discussed above.

Tip # 4 : Keep your skin looking its best with healthy habits

- * Stop tanning: Every day dermatologists tell their patients that it can cause wrinkles, brown spots, and skin cancer.

- * Protect your skin from the sun: To protect your skin from the sun, seek shade, cover up with clothing, and wear sunscreen that offers SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection, and water resistance

- * Always remove your makeup before going to bed: Leaving makeup on while you sleep can age your skin more quickly and cause breakouts.

- * The World Health Organization (WHO) advises us to consume no more than six teaspoons (about 25 grams) of sugar per day

Lastly, See a dermatologist if you have a skin condition. Anyone with a skin condition that affects their quality of life like eczema or rosacea should see a board-certified dermatologist.

I hope these tips helped you out, more to come. SPREAD THE WORD. So everyone can feel comfy in their skin 😌🫂🩷

2024/2/7 Edited to

... Read moreAfter years as a skincare enthusiast and now working as a licensed esthetician, I've noticed a common thread among so many of my clients: the desire for a simple, yet effective routine. It's easy to get overwhelmed by endless products, but truly, 'less is often more,' especially when focusing on gentle care. Many think a squeaky-clean feeling means a good wash, but that's often a sign of a cleanser stripping your skin's natural barrier. For a truly gentle approach, look for pH-balanced cleansers – usually around 5.5 – that don't contain harsh sulfates (like SLS/SLES) or strong artificial fragrances. My personal tip for sensitive skin is to use lukewarm water and gently massage your cleanser for about 60 seconds before rinsing. Over-washing or using hot water can exacerbate sensitivity, leaving your skin feeling tight and irritated. Remember, a good cleanser should leave your skin feeling soft and clean, not dry or tight. We all know sunscreen is crucial, but are you using it correctly? Beyond just SPF 30, ensure it’s 'broad-spectrum,' meaning it protects against both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). And don't forget to reapply! If you're spending time outdoors, especially after sweating or swimming, reapplying your sunscreen every two hours is non-negotiable. I personally love mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) for their immediate protection and often better tolerance for sensitive skin, but chemical ones work great too if they suit you. It's the most impactful of all healthy habits for long-term skin health. When adding a serum or treatment to address a specific concern, it’s about smart ingredient choices, not just adding more steps. For Sensitive Skin: Focus on barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or colloidal oatmeal. Avoid high concentrations of active ingredients initially. Patch testing is your best friend here! For Large Pores: While you can't permanently shrink pores, you can minimize their appearance. Niacinamide is fantastic for regulating oil and improving skin texture. Gentle chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs (used sparingly) can also help keep pores clear. For Combination Skin: This skin type can be tricky! Instead of one-size-fits-all, consider 'skin-zoning' – applying lighter, oil-free hydrators to oilier areas (like the T-zone) and richer creams to drier spots. Layering a light hyaluronic acid serum under a gel moisturizer can work wonders without feeling heavy. For Anti-Aging: Besides daily sunscreen, ingredients like retinoids (retinal, retinol) and Vitamin C are gold standards. Introduce them slowly, especially retinoids, to avoid irritation, which is key for a gentle skincare routine. Remember, consistency is more important than strength when it comes to these ingredients. To truly make your routine effective, remember ACT: Adjustable, Consistent, Tailored. Adjustable: Your skin's needs change with seasons, stress levels, and age. For example, in winter, I often switch to a richer moisturizer and a creamier cleanser. During breakouts, I might temporarily add a salicylic acid spot treatment. Consistent: This is where many give up! Skincare isn't magic; it takes time. Stick with a product for at least 4-6 weeks to see real results, unless it's causing irritation. Making it a daily ritual, like brushing your teeth, helps immensely. Tailored: This is where esthetician advice truly shines. Your skin is unique. What works for a friend might not work for you. Listen to your skin and build a routine that addresses your specific concerns and preferences, not just what's trending. This personalization is key to a truly minimal products approach – only use what your skin truly needs. Finally, remember that skincare isn't just what you put on your face. Lifestyle plays a huge role. Continuing with the healthy habits mentioned, hydration from within is vital – drink plenty of water! A balanced diet rich in antioxidants, managing stress, and getting enough sleep all contribute to a radiant complexion. If you're struggling with persistent conditions like eczema or rosacea, please consult a dermatologist. They can provide professional diagnosis and treatment plans that topical products alone cannot.
