Songkran Day

Thailand's official Songkran Day usually has three days, on April 13, 14 and 15 each year, which have different meanings and names according to ancient customs:

1. April 13: Songkran Day

It is the day when the sun moves into Aries. It is considered Thai New Year's Day.

Additional Importance: The Government designated it National Seniors Day to allow grandchildren to commemorate the grace of their parents and adults in their families.

2. April 14: Wanau

The word "Nau" means "stay," meaning the day the sun moves in between the old year and the new year, the day of the preparation of the merit.

Importance: The government designated it Family Day to encourage Thais to reunite and spend time with their families.

3. April 15: National Day

It is the day of the "change of rank," or the beginning of the new era, according to the Thai lunar completely.

Additional tidbits for 2026

Although there are traditionally three days, in terms of "public holidays" and celebrations, there may be more details:

Compensation holidays: Since 2026, April 13-15 falls exactly on Monday-Wednesday, there are no compensatory holidays on Saturday-Sunday, but they are 3 days of continuous holidays (or 5 days if counting Saturday-Sunday).

Flow Day: In some areas, Songkran may be played as long as April 16-20 (such as Pattaya Flow Day or Bang Hundred Thousand), a local tradition held after the main Songkran Day.
