americanized thai restaurant—

Thai Diner —is not your usual thai spot. as you can tell by the name, they serve local menu with a (lot of) twist.

the menu rotates once in a while. so far i have tried:

✨ crab fried rice ($28): a humongous plate of fried rice; it is packed with fat crab meat.

✨ som tum with fried chicken ($23): my first time having papaya salad with fried chicken, the combo i did not know i need.

✨ yen ta fo (bean curd soup) with mussels (no longer on the menu): bean curd soup is one of my fav and this is bomb. sadly, they do not have it now.

✨ banana rum pudding topped with crispy lotus flower ($10): banana pudding is not thai dessert but i love how they can add some touch to it with the topping.

overall, it is not an authentic spot if you are looking for one. but certainly you will be satisfied with all the food 🤍 some twists do not mean they are bad. but beware of a loooong line here 〰️

... Read moreStepping into Thai Diner in NYC, you immediately get a sense that this isn't your average Thai restaurant. The interior, with its warm lighting and inviting decor – think beautifully arranged tables against a woven bamboo wall adorned with a large, detailed wooden carving – sets a really cool, trendy vibe. It feels modern yet cozy, perfect for a lively meal out. I even noticed a lit candle on one table, adding to the thoughtful ambiance. What makes the “Thai Diner food” experience so unique is their playful approach to classic Thai dishes. It’s not about being inauthentic; it’s about taking beloved flavors and presenting them with a creative American twist. For example, my experience with the som tum (papaya salad) generously topped with crispy fried chicken pieces was a revelation – a combination I didn't know I needed, but now crave! And that humongous plate of crab fried rice? It's loaded with fat crab meat and perfectly seasoned, making it a standout dish that’s definitely shareable. While the menu rotates, there are always exciting options. I was lucky enough to try the yen ta fo (bean curd soup) with mussels, which was absolutely bomb, and the OCR even picked up a side of french fries, showing their fun fusion style! Even their desserts get a creative spin; the banana rum pudding, while not a traditional Thai dessert, was elevated with an ornate, crispy lotus flower-shaped wafer, adding a delightful texture and visual appeal. It’s a testament to how they infuse something familiar with an unexpected touch. My biggest tip for anyone planning a visit is to prepare for a line. This spot is popular for a reason! Those long waits are a common occurrence, especially during peak dinner hours. If you can, try to go during off-peak times or be ready to enjoy the lively atmosphere while you wait. The portions, like that impressive crab fried rice, are generally generous, making it a great place to order several dishes and share with friends, allowing you to sample more of their innovative menu. It’s definitely a culinary adventure worth experiencing in NYC for those who appreciate a fresh take on Thai cuisine.
