Hey everyone! I know how challenging it can be to get those perfect, long-lasting curls, especially with natural or black hair. After lots of trial and error, I've finally perfected my Pin Curls technique, and I'm so excited to share my step-by-step guide with you all. This method works wonders whether you're starting with a fresh silk press or embracing your beautiful natural hair texture. First things first, prep is key! I always start with clean, dry, or slightly damp hair (depending on the look I'm going for). If your hair is already straightened, like after a silk press, make sure it's completely dry. For natural hair, I usually apply a light leave-in conditioner and a styling mousse for hold. Step-by-Step Pin Curl Perfection for Black & Natural Hair: Sectioning is Your Best Friend: I find that working in small, manageable sections makes a huge difference. Start by parting your hair. The smaller the sections, the tighter and more defined your pin curls will be. For long hair, you might need slightly larger sections to save time, but don't go too big! Curl Creation: I usually use a curling wand or a flat iron to create the initial curl. For tight curls, wrap your hair tightly around the barrel. For looser waves, wrap it a bit more loosely. The key is to ensure the curl is uniform from root to tip. The Pinning Technique: This is where the magic happens! As soon as you release the hair from the heat, gently roll the warm curl up towards your scalp. Secure it with a duckbill clip or a bobby pin. Make sure not to flatten the curl too much; you want to preserve its shape. For short hair pin curls, you might need smaller clips and focus on the ends. Crucial Cooling Time: This step is often overlooked but it's SO important for pin curls cooling hair to set properly. Let your curls cool completely before you even think about touching them. I usually leave mine in for at least an hour, or even overnight if I have time. Sometimes, I even use a cool shot from my blow dryer over the pinned curls for a few minutes. Unpinning and Styling: Once your hair is completely cool, gently unpin each curl. Don't pull them straight down! Let them fall naturally. At this point, you can leave them as is for super defined curls, or gently separate them with your fingers (never a brush!) for more volume. For black hairstyles, a wide-tooth comb can also help gently separate. Finishing Touch: A light hold hairspray helps lock everything in. I love how these types of pin curls give me bouncy, voluminous hair that looks salon-fresh. I've even experimented with wig pin curls using this same method, and the results are just as stunning! Remember, practice makes perfect. Don't get discouraged if your first attempt isn't flawless. Keep trying, and you'll soon be a Pin Curls pro. For a visual guide, I'm thinking of doing a Hair Vlog soon to show you exactly how I achieve these curls!
