Okay, so many of you asked about my daily routine for these bouncy, defined curls, and I'm finally spilling all my secrets! It took me ages to figure out what truly works for my hair, moving past frizzy, undefined messes to truly embrace my natural texture. If you're wondering 'how to have defined curls' that actually last, you're in the right place. My curly hair routine starts even before shampoo. I love to pre-poo with a light oil or a conditioning treatment, letting it sit for about 20-30 minutes. This really helps to keep moisture locked in and prevents my hair from feeling stripped after shampooing. When I wash, I focus on a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo just on my scalp, letting the rinse-off clean the rest. Conditioning is where the magic really begins for definition. I slather on a generous amount of a rich conditioner, detangling gently with my fingers or a wide-tooth comb *while the conditioner is still in*. This is crucial for clumping my curls together, which is the first step to getting those beautiful defined bouncy curls. After rinsing most (but not all!) of the conditioner, I move onto styling. This is where you really dictate if you get loose curls natural or super-defined coils. For definition, I apply a leave-in conditioner, then a curl cream, and finally, a strong-hold gel to soaking wet hair. I use a combination of raking and scrunching. Sometimes, for extra definition, I'll use a Denman brush to create curl clumps. If I'm aiming for more loose curls natural look, I might skip the gel or use a lighter one, and just scrunch softly without too much manipulation. Drying is the next big step. I gently 'plop' my hair into a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel for about 15-20 minutes to absorb excess water without causing frizz. Then, I diffuse on a low heat and low speed setting. Diffusing helps to set the curls and create volume and bounce. I make sure to 'hover' the diffuser around my head first, then gently cup sections of hair, lifting them towards my scalp. Avoid touching your hair too much until it's completely dry to prevent frizz. Once dry, I 'scrunch out the crunch' from the gel, leaving me with soft, touchable defined bouncy curls. To make these curls last for days, a good nighttime routine is key. I usually pineapple my hair loosely on top of my head and sleep on a silk pillowcase or wear a silk bonnet. In the mornings, if my curls need a refresh, I'll lightly mist them with water mixed with a bit of leave-in conditioner and gently scrunch them back into shape. Sometimes a quick diffuse can bring back the bounce. It might seem like a lot at first, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature, and trust me, having those gorgeous, lasting curls is totally worth it!
