Heatstroke in dogs is a serious and potentially fatal condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity. Unlike humans, dogs cannot sweat effectively and rely heavily on panting to regulate their body temperature. When overheating occurs, symptoms such as excessive drooling, rapid heartbeat, muscle tremors, weakness, collapse, bright red or pale gums, and heavy panting or difficulty breathing emerge. It is crucial for pet owners to recognize these signs early to provide prompt care. Certain dogs are at a higher risk of heatstroke. These include seniors and puppies whose thermoregulation is less efficient, brachycephalic breeds (such as pugs, bulldogs, and shih tzus) due to their shortened airways, and long-haired or double-coated breeds like Huskies and Newfoundlands that retain heat. Dogs with heart or respiratory issues are also more vulnerable. Preventative measures are the best way to keep dogs safe in hot weather. Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler to reduce heat exposure. Always carry fresh water and offer it regularly to keep your dog hydrated. Cooling accessories like bandanas or vests can provide added comfort and heat relief. If heatstroke is suspected, immediate action is required: move your dog to a shaded or air-conditioned area, offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water, and apply cool, wet towels to the neck, armpits, and groin to lower body temperature.
