On all 3 of these pics I was having a pain crisis but I still smile and go on with my day because I don’t let SC define who I am as a mom, Realtor®️and fighter.#just keep smiling through pain #sicklecelldisease #sicklecellwarrior #noweaponformedagainstmeshallprosper #lemon8
It's easy to look at a photo and see a smile, but what truly lies behind it when you're facing chronic pain, like my journey with Sickle Cell Disease? For me, 'smiling through the pain' isn't about ignoring the intense crises or pretending everything is fine. It’s a conscious choice, a powerful act of defiance against an illness that tries to take over every aspect of my life. It's about refusing to let the pain define my identity as a mom, a professional, or simply as a person striving for joy. This philosophy is at the heart of what 'smiling through healing' means to me – acknowledging the struggle while actively engaging with life. Many days, when I look in the mirror, the reflection shows a person who has just battled through a pain crisis, or is bracing for one. Yet, I choose to find that inner strength, that spark to keep going. It's a daily reminder that even on the toughest days, my spirit remains unbroken. This isn't always easy, and there are moments of profound struggle and vulnerability, but finding the meaning in 'smiling through healing' for me means acknowledging the hurt while actively pursuing moments of happiness and purpose. It’s about understanding that recovery isn't just physical; it's deeply mental and emotional, requiring a holistic approach to well-being. Being a mom and a Realtor® while living with Sickle Cell means constantly balancing my health needs with my responsibilities and passions. There are days I feel like I'm truly 'smiling through the storm,' both literally and figuratively. So, what helps me maintain this resilience? First and foremost, a strong support system – my family and friends who understand and uplift me without judgment. Their encouragement is invaluable. Second, self-care, which isn't a luxury but a non-negotiable necessity. This can be anything from taking a quiet moment for myself, practicing mindfulness and deep breathing exercises during a pain episode, or simply allowing myself to rest when my body demands it. Another crucial wisdom I've gathered is the power of reframing my perspective. Instead of dwelling on what Sickle Cell prevents me from doing, I focus on what I can achieve, celebrating even the smallest victories each day. It’s about setting realistic expectations for myself and being kind when I can't meet them. I've learned that resilience isn't about never falling; it's about getting back up, sometimes with a tear-streaked smile. It's about drawing strength from within, even when the outside world sees only pain. My hope is that by sharing my experience, others facing their own 'storms' – whether it's chronic illness, personal challenges, or professional hurdles – can find a little bit of inspiration. Remember, a smile can be a mask, but it can also be a powerful shield, a declaration of strength, and a promise to yourself that you will keep moving forward, one brave step at a time. It’s about living life on your own terms, finding hope in healing, and choosing joy, even amidst life’s toughest challenges.
