We used an ozone generator for a few days, which really helped neutralize the embedded odors before we even thought about painting. Then, a heavy-duty, odor-blocking primer (like Kilz Restoration) was an absolute game-changer for ceilings and walls, especially around areas like the fireplace where smoke tends to accumulate. Skipping this step can lead to a ghost of smoke past haunting your new paint job! It felt like a monumental task just to get to a fresh canvas. Speaking of demolition, it’s always more involved than you anticipate, isn't it? The sheer amount of debris generated can be overwhelming. We found that having a large dumpster on-site from day one saved us countless trips to the dump. Also, investing in good quality dust masks, gloves, and ear protection is non-negotiable. When you’re pulling up old flooring and *paneling*, you never know what surprises (or hazards) you might find underneath. We once found some ancient, unexpected plumbing under what looked like perfectly normal *exposed subfloor*! Seeing you tackle the HVAC and water heater reminds me how crucial it is to consider these major systems early. It's often easier and more cost-effective to upgrade them when the walls are open and the *subfloor is exposed*, rather than trying to do it later. And doing a renovation *with family*? That’s a special kind of challenge and blessing all rolled into one. It’s amazing to have the extra hands and support, but it also requires a lot of communication and patience. There were definitely moments of frustration, but also so much joy in working together. We found that assigning specific tasks or areas for the day helped keep things organized and minimized stress.
