Happy Veterans Day🫶
At the ripe age of 17 in 2009 I made the decision to join the United States Army reserve. My time in the army reserve was short-lived because my unit was closed down in 2015. In 2015, I decided to join the active duty army. My first duty station was Hawaii, where I gained the opportunity to travel the world and experience new cultures. I left Hawaii in 2018 and my second duty station was Savannah Georgia although I didn’t get to travel the world as much I did deploy to Iraq. When I got pregnant in 2020 I decided to leave active duty and join the army National Guard in Atlanta Georgia. I am still currently serving in the United States Army National Guard. I do not plan to retire until at least 10 more years due to me not taking the military serious when I was in the reserve. My time in the military has not only taught me how to persevere, but most importantly it has taught me how to be a better person, a better woman, and a better mother! Happy Veterans Day to all of the veterans around the world! #armylife #militaryblackgirl #militarylife #armyveteran #militaryveteran
Serving in the military, whether in the Army Reserve, active duty, or National Guard, offers unique challenges and personal growth opportunities. Many service members begin their journey at a young age, as the author did at 17, discovering the value of discipline and perseverance. Duty stations like Hawaii and Savannah provide diverse cultural experiences that enrich a soldier’s life beyond their military duties. Hawaii, with its vibrant culture and natural beauty, often becomes a cherished memory for those stationed there. Similarly, deployments overseas, such as the author’s deployment to Iraq, add a profound dimension to service by challenging service members in ways that foster resilience and adaptability. Balancing military service with family life can be demanding, especially for women who may face challenges like pregnancy and motherhood while continuing their commitment to serve. The transition from active duty to National Guard service allows many to maintain their dedication while accommodating personal milestones. Veterans emphasize that military service cultivates qualities beyond skills and physical endurance—it builds character, fosters leadership, and helps shape individuals into better versions of themselves, not only for the military but also for their families and communities. Honoring Veterans Day means recognizing these diverse experiences and sacrifices that contribute to both national security and personal development. Whether you served for a brief period or have a decades-long career ahead, each veteran’s story adds to the rich fabric of military life and legacy. For those considering military service or currently serving, reflecting on stories like this can inspire and provide insight into the enduring impact of dedication and perseverance throughout a military career.
