My unconventional fur babies

Their exoskeletons, while rigid, can be damaged by a fall or improper handling. Imagine a fall from even a small height – it could be fatal. There's a big difference between handling and petting. While some experienced keepers might handle their tarantulas for rehousing, enclosure maintenance, or health checks, it's always done with extreme caution and minimal contact. True 'petting' involves prolonged physical contact, which can cause immense stress. When stressed, many tarantulas, especially New World species like my black and white striped beauty, can flick urticating hairs. These tiny, barbed bristles can cause skin irritation, itching, and even respiratory issues if inhaled. Trust me, you don't want that! My interaction with my tarantulas is more about observation and respect. I love watching my orange and black tarantula explore its driftwood perch, showcasing its hairy body and unique movements. Sometimes, during feeding, I might gently nudge a feeder insect closer with tongs. This isn't petting; it's facilitating their natural hunting behavior. I've learned to appreciate their subtle cues, understanding when they're relaxed and when they prefer their space.
