Varnishing some Australian bird spoons
Well, the weather has warmed up & stopped raining enough to actually get some varnish on these spoons. I decided to give the bird carvings two coats of water-based varnish and liquid wax the scoop part. As even the wax was finding it hard to cure. Once totally dry, they will be available fro

sanding a comfort Roo
catching up on some more sanding. These comfirt roos need a lot more elbow grease to get to the desired smoothness that i want to attain. After hand carving, I give them a quick run over with a small sanding drum, then hand sand them starting at 60 grit right up to 180 or 240 grit. That's 5 t

sanding rocking horses
I forget sometimes just how messy working with wood really is. I predominantly carve my pieces outside while watching the goat eat his dinner, -he likes the company! And... I have to make sure he doesn't eat my baby trees and bushes! I also do a lot of the hand sanding outside. As you can gu

🐓 Chicken spoon ready for painting
It seems chickens are rather a popular bird! So, I thought I would try to carve another spoon but a little differently from the first one that I tried recently. A little more refined and the tail feathers more noticeable. I do think I prefer this carving, a little more thought has gone into it!

progression of carving a rocking horse
This little fella has been cut from reclaimed pine timber pallet. I have hand carved with various chisels that you can sort of see in picture 3. Sanded him down nice and smooth and oiled him up with a food safe oil to protect him. Once dry I will drill a couple of holes for the eye hook, and to

Robin, Butcherbird, & random chicken scoops
I thought I would try carving a couple of different birds for my scoops. As you can see, one is a Flame Robin, Butcherbird, and a chicken..... just because! Well they are all birds after all!! The first two have been sanded and ready for a coat of sanding sealer (just on the carved bird). I have

hand carved comfort crosses
I have designed this cross to sit comfortably in your hand as a comfort piece. I have hand carved it from Cypress Pine, sanded it until smooth, and sealed it with a food safe liquid wax. As it is a wooden piece, the cross feels warm to hold and lovely to caress because it is so smooth. I have s

carved & painted, Kookaburra spoons
From just a cutout of a kookaburra to a painted kookaburra spoon. They are just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit so I can seal the painted areas with a varnish and the natural wooden scoop area with a food safe wax. I have cut these kookaburras from Acacia and carved them with a variet

YES, it's a hand carved galah spoon
The Galah may be a common Australian bird, but you really don't appreciate thier colours until you have to paint one. This rendition of the Galah has three shades of pink (a mid tone is within the crest that you can't see in this pic), and four shades of grey. This is my first attempt at

A Yellow robin, hand carved spoon
A little Australian Yellow Robin. Sadly this particular robin had a problem with having a narrow pointy beak. So it had to be happy with a different shape. It's funny what you miss seeing when you first set out a design. It never occurred to me that the longer pointy beak of the Yellow Robin

Gang gang Cockatoo, hand carved spoon
Another Australian bird that I had been trialling for a spoon handle - the Gang Gang Cockatoo. Before I had even finished painting it, it was sold. The only thing that I would do differently, is to make the bird slightly larger to match the other spoons a little better. But I like how he has c

Do you like my Rooster spoon?? I think I have fallen in love with him! I really like his googly eyes as they do give him a LOT of personality because the eyes stand out from the carving. I have set the eyes in and glued them, so they won't fall off. After creating this one, and this was a f

Kookaburra sculpture, carved & painted
I recently finished this commission for a hand carved kookaburra. I had carved this kookaburra months ago, but it sat unfinished on the painting desk until I was asked for a kookaburra carving. Thankfully it was almost done, as I only had a few days to complete and have it posted in time for a bir
