Supreme Court Blocks Trump’s Emergency Tariff Powers in Major 6–3 Decision
Delivering a major legal setback to former President Donald Trump, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that he exceeded his authority by imposing sweeping global tariffs under a law meant for national emergencies.
In a 6–3 decision, the justices said the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not permit broad country-by-country tariffs. While some steel and aluminum tariffs remain unaffected, key “reciprocal” tariffs and certain 25% import tariffs have been overturned — though Trump could attempt to reintroduce them using other laws.
