Appointed as VCA

Each generation has its own challenges to overcome. For ours, one significant challenge is dealing with the rate of change.

Retrenchment, new societal and global norms, technological change, increasing demands for a high standard of living, and a shift in many things—from what it means to hold a degree, to what exactly constitutes a hireable skill in the face of Artificial Intelligence, to the larger philosophical question of what the meaning of work is—all of these continue to be redefined on almost a daily basis.

While I may not be able to solve all of these problems, I have chosen to contribute in my own small way by signing up to be a Volunteer Career Advisor (VCA), to support not only Singaporeans who need career guidance, but also to bring this skill set to my current organisation, as well as to my friends and associates. Today, I have been officially appointed by the Skills & Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) as a VCA.

Coaching is not new to me. Since 2014, when I started BACP, coaching has been a core part of the business, forming one of its four core pillars as a mechanism for Character, the first of the four pillars. My early belief in coaching led me to one of the world’s leading coach training organisations—the Co-Active Training Institute (CTI), where I was sponsored to attend one of its training programmes. For the uninitiated, CTI’s founders were instrumental in the establishment of the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the professional body that sets global coaching standards and awards coaching credentials such as ACC, PCC, and MCC.

While coaching and advisory are effective tools, they are not silver bullets. A successful outcome depends on the commitment and fit of the individual, market forces, and, to some extent, even luck. But like what I have always believed in: show up, pay your dues, and leave the rest to God. The most important part is to take concrete steps to help improve the situation, both for ourselves and for the community. And not forgetting that while today I may be the one extending support, tomorrow I may need such support from others too.

If you’re navigating a career transition, uncertain about your next step, or simply looking for someone to think through your options with, I’d be glad to help. If I can be of service, you can book a session with me at:

https://vcai.swda.gov.sg/dl/6471c6/s/56132a/r/a.yJZKIKeT8-jrptd19xh-g

I hope to be able to make a meaningful difference to every individual who reaches out.

... Read moreBeing appointed as a Volunteer Career Advisor (VCA) by the Skills & Workforce Development Agency (SWDA) is more than just a title—it's a commitment to actively support the professional growth and resilience of the workforce. Through my experience, I’ve found that career transitions are rarely straightforward, especially in today’s fast-evolving economy where technology and AI continuously reshape job landscapes. Having undergone intensive training with SWDA, the program equips VCAs with knowledge on current labour policies, government support schemes, and tailored guidance approaches. One personal insight I gained from coaching mid-career workers is the vital role of mindset shifting—from viewing change as a threat to embracing it as an opportunity for growth and reinvention. A key part of advising involves connecting individuals with relevant government initiatives designed to upskill and reskill workers. The last-mile connection that VCAs provide ensures people not only receive information but also practical access to these resources. This linkage has proven essential in helping individuals rebuild confidence and create actionable plans. From my coaching experience, I’ve observed that success in career growth hinges on several factors: a clear understanding of one’s strengths, openness to learning new skills, and strategic planning aligned with industry trends. VCAs play a crucial role in guiding workers through this process by offering an empathetic ear and experienced perspective. Moreover, the community aspect of the VCA program fosters collaboration and continuous learning. Participating in SWDA-curated events keeps me updated on labour market developments and provides opportunities to share best practices with fellow advisors. For anyone feeling uncertain about their next professional step, connecting with a Volunteer Career Advisor like myself can be an invaluable resource. Together, we can explore options, identify strengths, and strategize pathways that suit individual aspirations and market realities. Ultimately, my goal as a VCA is to empower individuals to navigate change confidently and make informed career choices that enhance both personal satisfaction and economic sustainability. If you’re considering a career transition or seeking advice on job opportunities in Singapore, I recommend booking a session. The support available through SWDA and VCAs is designed to ensure no one navigates these challenges alone.
