Snow in Australia 😍 (September)

Brought myself on a mini hike at Cradle Mountain ⛰️ in Tasmania at the end of September and was surprisingly greeted with snow! Not just snow on the floor, but FALLING SNOW ❄️ when I reached Wombat Peak.

My initial plan was to reach Marions Lookout via Dove Lake but when I was about 25 minutes away, snow started falling and strong winds started hitting my face. ❌ Plan abandoned ❌ Hence, I descended and made my way back to Dove Lake via Wombat Pool Track.

🥾 Hiking sticks (but not needed), Hiking Boots and Windproof Jacket

🕰️ Whole hike took around 2 hours, scenery admiring included.

I also did a hike up Hansons Peak in May 2024, and that was the real challenging one! Will write about it soon, when the weather turns warmer to help those planning a trip to Tassie in the warmer months 😬

And if you’re looking for a place to stay near Cradle Mountain, read about my stay at Cradle Mountain Lodge!

... Read moreDuring my hike, I learned that snow at Cradle Mountain in September is quite uncommon but definitely possible, especially at higher elevations like Wombat Peak. Many people wonder about the snow season in Tasmania and whether activities like skiing are feasible—Tasmania’s ski season is limited but the snowy landscape offers a unique hike experience worth seeking. If you plan to visit during colder months, layering is key. I found that wearing a windproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots made a big difference in comfort and safety. Although I brought hiking sticks, they weren't necessary given the conditions, but they can be helpful for uneven terrain. The trails around Dove Lake and Wombat Pool provide scenic routes with potential snow sighting. Just be prepared for sudden weather changes—it’s wise to have proper gear like heattech innerwear or thermal socks if you’re sensitive to cold. Accommodation near Cradle Mountain Lodge is convenient for early starts and to fully enjoy the area. Plus, Tasmania offers numerous other attractions worth exploring if you want to extend your trip beyond Cradle Mountain. Overall, witnessing snow in Tasmania in September was an unexpected treat and a reminder that Australian winters can be more varied than many expect. Whether you’re into hiking or just sightseeing, Cradle Mountain in early spring can surprise you with stunning snowy panoramas.
