‘Non-negotiables’ … almost cost me a home 😳

I started house hunting with a list of “non-negotiables”…

And honestly? I regret having them 😅

Here are 3 things I thought I needed — and why I eventually let them go 👇

1️⃣ Must live near the city 🏙️

Why I thought I needed it:

• New country, unfamiliar environment

• Wanted easy transport + familiar vibes

Why I let it go:

Melbourne is HUGE — you’ll likely need a car anyway 🚗

• Being near public transport mattered less than I thought

• And truthfully? I don’t go into the city that often

2️⃣ Must be fully furnished 🛋️

Why I thought I needed it:

• Didn’t want the hassle or cost

• Only planning to stay for a year

Why I let it go:

IKEA basics are actually affordable

• Unfurnished places are usually cheaper to rent

• More freedom to set up the space my way

3️⃣ Must be near grocery stores & restaurants 🍽️

Why I thought I needed it:

• Coming from Singapore, convenience is everything

• I planned to cook a lot and wanted easy access

Why I let it go:

• Big grocery stores are everywhere 🛒

• Free parking + bulk buying works better when you drive

• Eating out in Melbourne adds up FAST 💸

When the apartment I eventually rented came along, it was unfurnished — and surprisingly, it felt right.

I got to decide how the space worked for me, and honestly? No regrets.

What I learnt:

When rental conditions are stacked against you and your budget is tight, some compromises that feel uncomfortable at first end up making the most sense.

... Read moreWhen moving to a new city like Melbourne, it's natural to create a list of rental 'non-negotiables' to feel secure in unfamiliar surroundings. However, as many renters find, holding too tightly to these can limit opportunities and increase stress. For example, the need to live near the city center might seem essential for comfort and convenience, especially coming from a dense urban environment such as Singapore. Yet Melbourne's vast size and transportation infrastructure mean driving becomes necessary regardless, and proximity to the city may not equate to better daily convenience. Similarly, insisting on renting a fully furnished apartment to avoid hassle or upfront costs might initially feel logical, particularly for short-term stays. But affordability and personalization are often reasons why unfurnished rentals can provide more value and a greater sense of home, with options to furnish gradually and tailor a space to your tastes and needs. Convenience around grocery stores and restaurants is another common requirement. While easy access is convenient, Melbourne's spread-out shops and the advantage of free parking for bulk grocery shopping often make driving to larger stores more economical and efficient than smaller local outlets. Plus, dining out frequently can add up financially, so planning meals and shopping with a car can be a smart budget move. Ultimately, being flexible with rental requirements can open possibilities for finding a home that truly fits your lifestyle and budget. It's important to weigh initial comfort against long-term affordability and personal preferences. Compromising on certain 'must-haves'—like location, furnishings, or immediate access to amenities—doesn’t mean settling. It means adapting and taking control of your living space in ways that support your overall wellbeing and finances. Many who embrace this mindset enjoy stronger satisfaction in their homes and a more enjoyable living experience in their new city.
