Things History Textbooks Didn’t Tell Me 🇸🇬

History lessons were fun in lower secondary, but textbooks never told me who was actually driving the separation.

I visited The Albatross File: Singapore’s Independence Declassified exhibition thinking it would be…

📖 dry

📅 full of dates

😴 something I’d rush through

But I was wrong.

Growing up, I learnt about Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in a very simplified way — key events, key outcomes, move on.

At this exhibition, I realised how much was left out.

Seeing the real documents, notes, and voices from that time made everything feel more human.

There wasn’t just one clear story — there were pressures, disagreements, and difficult decisions happening behind closed doors.

What surprised me most was realising:

👉 the separation wasn’t as straightforward as it sounded in school

👉 different people had different agendas

👉 and power played a huge role in how things unfolded

It made me pause and think:

History isn’t just about what happened.

It’s also about who made the decisions — and who had to live with them.

💡 Good news if you’re not a history person:

• The information is broken into bite-sized sections

• Lots of interactive displays 🎥🖥️

• You don’t need prior knowledge to understand it

• You can go at your own pace, no pressure

It’s more like exploring than studying.

If you think you already know Singapore’s independence story, this exhibition might surprise you — it definitely did for me.

❗️remember to book your free tickets before heading down. I went down on a weekday and no walk-ins was accepted.

For instance, the archival notes uncovered here reveal that the separation was filled with tension, secret dialogues, and conflicting agendas — elements that add layers of understanding to Singapore’s independence. The exhibit’s interactive format helped me digest complex political maneuvers in manageable sections, which is great for anyone who, like me, isn’t usually a history buff. It’s fascinating to see how leaders balanced power and persuasion, and how these behind-doors decisions directly impacted ordinary lives. If you're planning a visit, remember that booking your tickets in advance is essential, as walk-ins aren't accepted. Going on a weekday also helped avoid crowds, allowing me to explore calmly and at my own pace. For history lovers or curious explorers, this exhibition offers a rare glimpse into a side of Singapore’s past that textbooks never told me about.

Why Singaporeans are All the Same
It seems to me that my entire educational journey in Singapore is much more about competing than learning and i’m sure many others feel the same. The truth is, Singapore’s meritoratic educational system rewards consistency over creativity and correct answers over thought provoking questions. 🗣️ Let

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
I wasn't expecting to love this book so much. ✨️️ It's a historical fiction that spans over 4 generations of a Korean family living in Korea and Japan under the Japanese occupation. It is so well written and depicts the decisions each family member undertakes and echoes through the decades.

The hard decision
I was once strongly advised not to join CCAs in university. I was told they didn’t add much, and that stepping away — even after committing — would be the wiser choice. On the surface, it sounded reasonable. But what wasn’t visible was my history. I never really had a proper chance befo
