Low Porosity Hair Products

Hey everyone! So many of you ask me about my hair routine, especially since I've mentioned having low porosity hair. It took me a while to figure out what works, but once I did, it made a world of difference. If you're wondering if you have low porosity hair, here's a quick way to tell: take a strand of clean hair and drop it into a glass of water. If it floats on top for several minutes before slowly sinking, you likely have low porosity! This means your hair cuticles are tightly sealed, making it hard for moisture to get in, but also hard for it to escape once it's there. Now, you might also be curious about high porosity hair examples – that's when the cuticles are more open, absorbing moisture quickly but losing it just as fast. Think hair that feels dry, prone to frizz, and takes color easily. For us low porosity folks, the challenge is getting that hydration into the hair shaft without causing build-up. Finding the right shampoos for low porosity hair was a game-changer for me. I learned that heavy, protein-rich products can sometimes sit on the hair and weigh it down. Diluting your conditioner or using a leave-in spray can help distribute moisture without weighing down your strands. Regular clarifying is even more important here to maintain volume and prevent flatness. And for those with coarse low porosity hair, you might find that while your hair is strong, it's still resistant to moisture. You'll want to ensure deep conditioning treatments are a regular part of your routine. Using a steamer or applying conditioner under a shower cap for 20-30 minutes with gentle heat can help open those cuticles and allow the product to penetrate more effectively. The goal is to get that moisture in and then seal it with a lightweight leave-in. Ultimately, it’s about understanding your hair and tailoring your routine.
