HELP! WHAT ORDER SHOULD I READ THE BIBLE IN?

Disclaimer: There is no right or wrong way to read the Bible! This is just the way I recommend as someone who read it in a completely different order.(and was confused at times)

Why is the gospel not first? Jesus consistently alludes to the Torah. It’s easier to understand the what the biblical authors are telling you if you’re able to catch similar themes and symbols.

If you want to share another way to read the Bible, feel free to share in the comments! This is just a recommendation, not a debate! :)

... Read moreI remember feeling so overwhelmed when I first tried to read the Bible. It’s a huge book, and just opening it randomly often left me more confused than enlightened! That’s why I started looking for a clear, understandable path, especially as a beginner. This isn't the only way, but it's the sequence that truly helped me connect the dots and grasp the incredible narrative of God's Word. My recommendation starts with the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy). You might wonder why not start with Jesus? As the original article mentioned, Jesus consistently alludes to the Torah! Understanding the foundational stories of creation, God’s promises, and the laws He set provides a crucial backdrop. It’s like reading the prologue to an epic saga – essential for appreciating what comes next and understanding God’s character. Next, I found it incredibly impactful to move into The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). With the Torah’s foundation, Jesus’s life, teachings, miracles, crucifixion, and resurrection take on a deeper meaning. You’ll recognize prophecies fulfilled and understand His actions in light of the Old Testament, making this heart of our faith even more powerful. From there, Acts makes perfect sense. It details the birth and spread of the early church and the Holy Spirit’s power, naturally following the Gospels and showing Christ’s immediate impact. Then, I like to weave in the Poetry books (Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Job). These offer a beautiful blend of worship, wisdom, and raw human emotion, providing spiritual and emotional balance. They teach us how to navigate life and seek God’s wisdom. Following Acts, delving into the Letters (Pauline and General Epistles) is perfect. These were written to early churches and individuals, offering practical guidance on Christian faith and doctrine. This is where you get a lot of "how-to" for Christian living, building directly on Jesus’s life and the early church’s growth. If you ever wondered "what comes after the book of Acts" for understanding the church's ongoing work, these letters provide comprehensive answers. After the letters, I found it helpful to explore the broader History books (Joshua through Esther). These fill in the gaps of Israel’s journey after the Torah, showing their triumphs, failures, monarchy, exile, and return—a powerful lesson in God’s sovereignty. Finally, we have the Major Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel) and Minor Prophets (Hosea through Malachi). These deliver God’s messages of warning, judgment, and hope. Reading them after the historical books helps contextualize their messages. And, of course, Revelation, the culmination of God’s plan, ties everything together with a vision of the future. Beyond just the order, here are a few tips that made my journey richer: make it a habit (even 15 minutes daily with your King James Holy Bible!), personalize your Bible (my purple tabs are a game-changer!), try journaling your thoughts, and always start with prayer. Connecting in #biblestudy groups also helps immensely. Remember, it’s a journey, not a race. Enjoy!

Be led by God. You can’t just follow what other people tell you to do when it comes to do with things of God. We’re all led to do different things. I randomly opened my bible then was led to read Hebrews. Trust God will give you understanding as well.
