Concealer Mistakes Making Your Makeup Look Worse!

How you apply your concealer and what products you use can make or break your base routine!

❌ Mistake 1: Using the wrong shade for your skin tone!

• Choosing the right color for your skin tone can make your base look more seamless

- Too Cool-Toned: Makes face appear pink/red

- Too Light: Makes skin appear grey

❌ Mistake 2: Using a formula that does not mix well with your skin type or other products

• This can lead to a finish that is not ideal

- Stick Formula: A dryer, matte formula that is better for spot concealing

- Creamy Formula: Great for dry skin, can be too slippery and not enough coverage for oily skin

- Full Coverage Formula: A little goes a long way, and applying too much can make makeup appear cakey

... Read moreOkay, girl, let's be real – we've all been there. You spend precious minutes perfecting your base, only to look in the mirror later and see your concealer separating under your eyes, settling into fine lines, or making you look ghostly with a shade that's just too light! It's one of the most frustrating concealer mistakes that can truly make your makeup look worse. I used to struggle with my under-eye concealer looking grey and cakey, no matter what I did, and I was so close to giving up on it entirely. One of the biggest culprits for concealer separating on skin or looking "too dry, creasing" is often product overload or lack of proper skin prep. Before you even think about applying concealer, ensure your under-eye area is well-hydrated with a good eye cream. I discovered that skipping this step was why my stick formula: matte/dry concealers always looked awful on me. After hydrating, try applying a tiny amount, truly a "little goes a long way," especially with full coverage formulas. Instead of rubbing, gently pat and blend with your ring finger or a damp beauty sponge. I found that pressing the product into my skin, rather than swiping, made a huge difference in preventing that dreaded separation. Also, if your concealer is too creamy, separation can occur if it's not set. A light dusting of translucent powder, gently pressed on, can lock it in without looking heavy. Now, let's talk about the nightmare of the wrong concealer shade. This was my personal makeup Everest! I always thought I needed the lightest shade to brighten, but it often resulted in my under-eyes looking too light, appears gray. The OCR mentioned "too cool-toned" and "perfect undertone," and this is key. If you have warm or neutral undertones, using a concealer that is too cool-toned can indeed make your face appear pink or even grey, especially if it's also too light. I learned to look for a shade that matches my foundation or is just one shade lighter, with an undertone that complements my skin. For brightening, a peach-toned corrector under your regular concealer can work wonders for darkness without making you look ghostly. Another trick I picked up: test shades not just on your hand, but on your jawline or even a small patch under your eye (if you're brave enough in the store!). That's how I finally found my perfect undertone. And finally, the formula. Oh, the formula! The article rightly points out that using a formula that does not work with your skin type is a huge no-no. For those with dry skin like mine, a water-based: creamy, hydrating formula is a dream. It blends seamlessly and doesn't emphasize dryness. However, if you have oily skin, a very creamy formula might slide right off or cause makeup separating under eyes. In that case, a slightly more matte or long-wearing formula might be your best friend. I've even mixed a tiny drop of face oil with a slightly dryer concealer to make it more pliable for my skin, but be careful not to dilute the coverage too much. It's all about understanding your skin's needs and experimenting a little to find what truly works for you to avoid those frustrating concealer separating under eyes moments. You've got this!
