books i DNF’d and why🫧

i do not usually DNF books but every so often i get bored of something and i am forced not to finish it…

🖤Throne of Glass! i really loved this series and i rlly rlly rlly wanted to finish the SJM multiverse but imma be honest here… i got lowkey bored. i read ACOTAR and loved it so i thought i would love this just as much. but i rlly didnt. I WANTED TO AND I TRIED. but i couldn’t bring myself to finish it. after reading ACOTAR there is just something so repetitive that i cannot put my finger on with the rest of her books. idk if it’s the FMCs or what. or the fact that these girls are always hooking up w the same copy paste broody ripped dudes with wings. idk. but i really wanted to finish this and just never have.

🖤Dune! Now typically the length of a book doesn’t intimidate me but Dune…. that shit is bible sized. i’m bummed because i really love the book like what i have read of it that is. but it’s such an intimidating read. i’m almost wondering if it would be more lucrative just to listen to it instead. bc at this point idk if i’m going to pick it up again. Dune is like THAT bitch when it comes to sci-fi. so i really wanted to be a well rounded individual and read arguably like the coolest sci-fi saga ever written. but i can’t… i’m scared.

🖤A Touch of Darkness! straight up… this shit was ASS. and i like read the vast majority of this series before i thought to myself, “yo this is ass and i actually do not give enough of a fuck about the world building or the story to see this one through.” and i have read some suspicious literature in my day! you know how bad something has to be for me to actually think it is bad? it has to be dog shit. that’s just my opinion though. maybe other people actually like poorly retold versions of the hades and persephone myth where demeter is an abusive mother. not me, but maybe some people.

🖤The Butcher and The Wren! i wanted to support my girl Alaina so bad and see this one through. it’s good! do not get me wrong she worked so hard on this book and it’s very well written. i just discovered while reading it that i actually don’t like crime/slasher novels. her podcast w her sister though? i love it. Morbid is my top podcast every spotify wrapped, love those girls so much. i just picked this up and never finished it. i’m sure it’s a gripping read if you like the genre, but i just don’t:( makes me very sad that i may never actually finish this just bc i find it lowkey boring.

... Read moreDiving into the world of literature often leads to encounters with books that just don’t resonate. The phenomenon of DNF'ing (Did Not Finish) is common among readers, and it can stem from various factors, including pacing, writing style, or simply a lack of connection with the characters. For instance, in Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass series, many fans find the repetitive nature of the story disappointing, especially after enjoying her other works like ACOTAR. Similarly, Frank Herbert's Dune, recognized as a sci-fi masterpiece, may deter readers with its daunting length and complex themes. Those who appreciate epic tales might find value in transitioning to audiobooks to make this classic more accessible. On the other hand, retellings of famed myths, such as the Hades and Persephone story seen in A Touch of Darkness, can evoke strong reactions. When these adaptations don’t meet expectations, readers can experience a palpable disconnect. Lastly, even books well-written like The Butcher and The Wren can fall flat for readers who prefer different genres. It's important to acknowledge these diverse tastes in literature and understand that DNF'ing doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of the book, but rather the individual’s preferences and reading journey.

Books I wish I DNF’d ❌
This was before I knew how to DNF a book and… I wish I had with these. My main reasons were either the book was way too unrealistic for a thriller/unbelievable, not age appropriate or just straight up boring 🥱 No hate if you liked these! They just were my cup of tea and that’s okay! ✨
