Living abroad, especially in a new country like the US, brings unique challenges, including keeping our living spaces functional and inspiring. From my own experience, the kids' room is often a place that gets cluttered and overlooked during busy times or major life transitions, such as emigrating. I waited two years after moving to America before I finally took on this project of rearranging and decluttering my children's room. It was not just about aesthetics but also about creating a more practical and comfortable space where my kids, aged 6 and younger, could feel at home and have enough room to play and grow. One of the biggest lessons I learned during this process was not to delay such tasks thinking we will move soon or that we didn’t have 'enough time.' Living day to day, I realized that small improvements to our current environment can significantly boost mood and energy. Starting with removing old toys, drawings, and unused furniture helped us breathe new life into the room. We opted for a bunk bed to maximize floor space, which surprisingly made the room feel bigger instead of cramped. Also, I found that reaching out for help from neighbors is invaluable; during the rearrangement, neighbors kindly helped us carry heavy items and clean up, which made the process smoother and more enjoyable. Organizing storage was another critical step. The existing closets were not very convenient, so I replaced them with easy-to-access shelving and bins that my kids can use themselves. This not only keeps things neat but also teaches them responsibility over their belongings. If you are considering a similar room makeover, my advice is to start small, focus on functionality, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Plus, documenting the journey and reflecting on it can provide motivation as you see the transformation. Finally, this experience also gave me a mental break from other responsibilities and helped me regain focus and energy. It’s amazing how a physical change in living space can positively impact your well-being and productivity, especially when juggling life in a new country.
